The problem with these cars is that they are now approaching 20 years old and are not aging quite as well as previous models. They have a lot of proprietary parts that are known to fail.
Most modern techs don't know how to deal with anything not OBD2. Most old school mechanic's don't know how to deal with anything injected. If you do find the guys that work on the OBD0 and OBD1 cars, most of them are scared off of the Z32 due to the packaging and the many bespoke bits. They truely arent bad but the common parts that fail are not cheap and unless you have a tech well versed in Z32's they can be tricky to diagnose. This makes for lots of downtime and high repair bills for a car that is now only worth a couple grand for a good driver.
The timing belt is difficult as timing belts go, mostly just time consuming if you now what you're doing. Common issues include, CAS, PTU, MAS, injectors, Knock sensor, Coil packs, power steering hoses, suspension bushings. Most of these are wear items that would age out on any car, their lifespan seems a bit shorter on Z32's and replacement is generally more time consuming and the parts tend to be more expensive. Beyond that, coolant hoses, there are lots of little ones under the plenum and it's a time consuming job to replace them. The wiring gets brittle and or moisture makes it's way in, often the electrical issues tend to be the connector more often than the actual part, this is where a good tech shines.
Also you posted in the wrong section so, i'll move this thread to the Z32 section.
