Manual.

1) They're more fun.

2) It takes more skill to drive them.

3) Because it takes skill and concentration, it will most likely lower your chances are getting into an accident. This is because you won't be able to be messing around with friends or getting something from your backseat and letting the car coast as much as you would with an automatic. Which will cause you to pay more attention to the road. : ) Or at least, thats my logic.

4) The joy of driving wears off so much faster with an automatic. : )

My first car was an Auto 1990 240sx and after about a week of driving I already wanted to sell it and find a Manual, thats what I got for being in a hurry to pick up my car...If you really want to enjoy your car getting a manual is really your only option.

I had an Auto 78 Malibu Classic, everything since is a manual.

Get a stick shift. Everone should know how to drive one and like Daunt said, They are more fun.

If you know how to drive a manual, you can drive an automatic. The other way round doesn't work

Yea, I ended up pricing mine around 580. I got lucky though, and found a $200 120k mile transmission. The first step is to find a transmission. It's not as easy as you think.

just wait and buy a manual.my first was a 92 240, auto. i sold it because i wanted a manual sooooo bad and now i have a 92 240 manual, in much better condition and more options.

i also agree with dauntless. you have to pay more attention when driving a manual, theyre much funner, and you get bored very fast with an auto.

Automatic.

New drivers should be paying attention to their surroundings, and other drivers rather than learning how to shift and drive smoothly. They should be getting to know their own driving style, and how to react to different situations. Kids are much too cavalier, and manuals tend to be fast cars. They will drive fast, and claim they know it all after half a year of driving, and we all know this is far from the truth.

Just my .02

Nick.

I have to respectfully disagree with Zebrahead up there. Personally I feel that a new driver should have a manual. I had a manual, and it made me pay attention to my surroundings, because I needed to know when to shift or when to push the clutch in to stop, and so on, and so on....

I agree...Learning to shift is knowlegable, and makes you concentrate more....you should have the feel for a clutch before you go driving on the streets though.

WHAT THE HELL TYPE OF QUESTION IS THAT!!! MANUAL! GET MANUAL YOU WUSS! just play'n. if you live in the city, and your not looking to race your car, then get an automatic. (stop and go theory) If you live anywhere else then get the F'n manual!

i didn't read all of this, but take it from someone else that bought a auto 240 first. it sucks. yes, its fun at first, but it gets VERY VERY boring. so, here soon, i'm 5spd swapping. i'm gettin all the parts for free except the transmission (gettin for 100) the clutch (gettin a clutch masters stage one) the flywheel, the driveshaft, and the engine backing plate or sumthin like that. so trust me, get a manual 240. it will be so much better.

My first car was an automatic, and I had it for 2 years. Yeah, it was nice to not have to worry about learning how to shift and all that why I was still figuring out everything else about driving...but to be honest, it doesn't take that much time to figure out what it takes to drive. I got bored with the auto real fast and wished desperately that my car was a stick.

Now I'm on my first 5-speed car, and it's great. I vote manual. :)

if you don't know how to drive a stick and you are a compleate idiot you will burn up clutches, and that can get costly, but if you can drive a stick, then drive like you stole the damn thing

Manual's essential for anything performance oriented, but for a commuter car I'd get automatic, being stuck in an hour and a half worth of traffic and constantly shifting is something I can do without. My civic's auto and my 240's manual, so I can get the best of both worlds. I considered swapping the civic's engine and transmission to the b16 (manual), but now I'm shifting more towards and automatic H22a setup, automatic is nice sometimes when you just feel like cruising or if you've got a special someone in the car with you. ;)
