Hi all, I'm new to the forum. Just picked up a 89 240sx bone stock.
I'm planning to make it a daily and weekend drifter. There are a couple of things I noticed about the car.
1. The previous owner made a homemade intake boot, so the valve cover breather hose has nothing to connect to. http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/ah1 ... tqwarr.jpg
2. The engine idles fine but rocks roughly side to side while idling. I checked all injectors and they all work well.
3. When I give it a little gas I believe I'm hearing the lifters rattle but, after a certain RPM it goes away. I've used Gummout engine treatment, which is better than Seafoam in the engine and gas. I have to run it through the intake and the engine again, which means I have to change the oil again. The car has been sitting for a while. It starts right up. I also changed the spark plugs. Engine seems to run smoother.
4. In one of the pics I'm holding a wire but, not sure what it connects to. It's located on lower part of the engine bay on passenger side.

I''m looking to find out what needs to be done to bring the car back to good shape?
I would appreciate all the feedback I can get.
Thanks in advance!

Congrats man, she looks pretty nice. The noise you are probably hearing is the timing chain slapping against the top of the valve cover. Definitely normal for a 240, the chain stretches out a bit after all the years of wear. Welcome to 240land. : D

Thanks for the response! Not sure how hard is it to do a DIY timing chain replacement. I'm still curious about the engine shaking during idle. it can also be felt in the car.

Considering single cam could be a collapsed lifter do 3qts oil one quart trans fluid for a lil bit will clean the lifter and hope its starts working again. as far as shaking at idle where is it idle at what rpms? and i have had one shage but idle almost normal but it had a vac leak

It idles at 700. I did engine treatment a couple of times and ran the engine without the valve cover on and all rocker arms were functioning properly. I think I loosened up a lifter but, there is a smooth spot on the valve cover that you can tell the chain has been hitting it. It's running smoother now. Engine still shakes a tad. I just think the engine was running like crap before I cleaned it up.

Could have blown motor mounts too.
Congrats on the pickup!
