i have a bunch of music equipment i want to buy but my mac pro doesnt have enough usb ports and only 1 firewire 800. i was wondering:

1. is there a converter for firewire 800 to 400? because most of the equipment i have is firewire 400.

2. is there a hub that has inserts for 400 and 800 but goes into my mac as 800?

2. does anyone know a good inexpensive usb hub i can get. preferably around 6 ports that i can plug into one port on my mac-pro.

If it was a PC I'd have a whole list of solutions. It'd be as simple as buying a $10 PCI card.

Any USB hub should work, just make sure it's powered (needs its own separate power source) if you want it to function as USB 2.0.

Yes. And to support any external device that is USB-powered ... in that case, you pretty much have to have a powered hub that has a wall-wart power source.

I have a number of hubs from Belkin and D-Link they all work fine ... no problems whatsoever on PC, PC laptops or Macbooks. My Belkin ones have 7 output USB posts.

OTOH, I don't know of any hubs that convert Firewire 800 to 400 ... but, you can get adapters that do the job for a single port: http://www.amazon.com/High-qua...MTV1I.
