Post

hey guys, if anyone of you saw my old posts last year i had a s13 with rb20. i sold that motor and picked up a s2 rb25det and swapped that in in the last few months. the motor runs stong, high compression #'s, idles perfect, no issues mechanically at all. but i got 2 common issues that i need to be cleared up.

first is a list of my entire setup so hopefully it can help.

s13 RB25DET series 2 swap, all stock. did regular tune up, oil pump, water pump and thermo, timing belt/ components.3" downpipe to 3.5 inch exhaust, no cat/res/muff.ISIS intake manifoldQ45 TBCometic Intake, exhuast gasketsStock turbo, stock boost 7psi

First issue, under boost im running rich. I have a AEM wideband hooked up accoring to spec and its registering around a 10.5 AFRS or even lower at full boost around 4,500 rpm and up, stock 7psi wastegate. I AM running a walboro 255 lph and today i just picked up a tomei type s adj. FPR. i just need to get the proper fitting to install it since it is a external type run off the fuel rail and then check my fuel pressure to see if that is the issue. I am running a stock rb25 s2 MAF, pink label e60 i believe. so i just wanted to make sure that in fact the walboro without a adj. fpr will make the motor run this rich. cause im burning a ton of gas and getting lots of backfires.

secondly, coilpack issues as usual. My ignition system is stock. running the NGK iridium bcpr6eix i believe. i have a set of NGK coppers i could try but im not sure what to set the gap at. My problem is basically when the motor has been running for awhile it gets slight break up. say if im on the highway crusing at 65 mpg and i downshift to 3rd and rip it around 5,500 rpm to redline it starts misfiring. But if you just start the motor up, let it warm up and then take it for a rip in 2nd and 3rd it will pull all the way to redline no problem with no misfires, it seems to just be a issue when the motor is warm. i have talked to a friend who said the same thing happened to his RB25 and also if he had turned up the boost at all it would happen all the time. Im just wondering what i can do to help fix the issue. i do not want to swap to a LSX coil pack set up yet. i really would like to see if i can run my stock coils till im ready to upgrade my turbo. My plans are to run 12-13 psi and get a nistune loaded z32 ecu on the car to hopefully make 300whp+. Im just not sure if for some reason the rich condition could be realated to the coilpacks failing. So far i have checked my coilpacks and plugs, the plugs look perfect even though they are the ones that came on my motor on my swap when i bought it so it might not be a bad idea to replace since i have no idea how old they are. I guess all i can do is clean the coils, tape them up and hope for the best. i was also wondering if there was a way to get the stock coils out of the stock location and run spark plug wires so i can run them somewhere in the engine bay and not so exposed to the heat of the motor as thats what seems to be making them mess up.

all issues aside though like i said this motor runs VERY well. hasn;t skipped a beat in the last week its been running and i've put prob 500 miles on it so far. theres NO hesitation at lower rpms, hasn;t come close to overheating, oil pressure is at stock spec for idle and load, not burning a drop of oil. im very impressed with it so far when its not misfiring or whatever it will break the 255 tires loose all the way through 3rd gear on my s13. quite a big torque difference from my 220hp RB20. oh well sorry i wrote a damn essay for yiou guys, hopefully someone can give me some help and lead me in the right direciton. i have a great idea of what i need to do just lookig or some reassurance from people who had the same prblems. thanks!!

just about the same thing he said i ran into the same problem with the ignition issue . i eventually wrapped up the coilpacks with 3 layers of the best electrical tape i could find, kept my coilpack cover off, changed the plugs over to ngk iridiums a 7 range, then wrapped up the power wire from the battery to the alt and starter power too who knows that might help. After all that it finally ran perfect going way past 5500 , that day was awesome lol . Try those it might help

yeah. for a temporary fix you can use electrical tape. But i used a silicone type epoxy and it works so much better. but make sure it sures for the rreccomended amount of time before you put them back in. it will help. But eventually your gonna have to get new coil packs, or do a wasted spark set-up. i reccomend wasted spark, because it will hold any amount of boost you could possible throw at it. and its relatively cheap, and since you have s S2 Rb25 then it wouldnt be hard at all to wire it in.

My car has a 255lph and the rest of the fuel system is stock and i can tell it runs rich, but its fine with me until i get my build going.
