Today I successfully installed the VLSD and axles from my R32 clip into my S13 :) Everything was a straight bolt-in affair. Simply remove old axles and open diff and replace with R32 counterparts.

I had to take it out and made sure it worked, so I found a remote road with a long straightaway. I revved up to about 4k and dropped the clutch, and sure enough left two pretty long black marks on the road :D

The only thing I'm not sure of is if the rear-end ratios are the same. I'll get someone to pace me in another car later and see if the speedo is still reading accurately. Hopefully this one isn't a 3.96 like the Z32TT.

yes where did you get the vlsd and axles from? id also like to know was it hard to remove and bolt that thing on? did u have to use a jack to lower it?

IT IS SIMILAR TO A TT GEAR RATIO. SO YEAH YOU'LL HAVE WAY LESS ACCEL AND MORE TOP-END WITH THAT DIFF.

The vlsd and axles came with my clip which I got from Jarco. It wasn't hard at all. This is something that requires lots of elbow grease though. The nut that holds the axle to the wheel hub is on there pretty tight, ie well over 150 ft-lbs. Make sure you have a strong parking brake to keep the wheel from rotating and a nice long breaker bar and it shouldn't be too bad. The 6 nuts that hold the halfshaft to the output shafts of the open diff on each side were also pretty tight but with Liquid Wrench and a smaller breaker bar they were doable.

You don't have to use a jack to lower down the diff but I suggest it. No matter how strong you are this thing is pretty awkward and heavy, and it'd be nice to have something to help support it. I just used a floor jack but a transmission jack would probably work better.

Are you positive about this? For some reason I thought I heard the R32 VLSD was the same as the 240. Guess I'll go do some more research

Edit: Ok did some more research on the Australian skyline boards. It appears the R32 GTS-T VLSD is either 4.3 or 4.11. Since the 240 open diff is 4.08 (I think?) then this diff will actually speed up my acceleration but give me a bit lower top end.

I WANT TO PUT AN R32 DIFF, BECAUSE IT HAS A HIGER TOP SPEED. BUT I MAY BE WRONG. IF ITS A GTS-T IT IS MID-WAY BETWEEN THE TT AND 240, IF ITS A GTR ITS LIKE THE TT.

OHH I ASKED SOMEONE AND THEY SAID IT WAS 4.02 OHH WELL YEAH THAT IS GREAT FOR ACCELERATION, SORRY I WAS MISSINFORMED. BUT I DO KNOW THE GTR IS LIKE THE TT. YEAH BUT THE RB ENGINES WILL HIT A HIGHER TOP SPEED ANYWAY.

According to this site, http://www.skylinesdownunder.co.nz/tech/r32/index.html, the RB20DET 2wd 5sp rear end ratio is 4.363. This is 1.069x the 240's open diff ratio. So, I know this means my speedo will read 1.069x what I'm actually doing but does this also mean I'll accelerate 1.069x as quickly? If so then if the car ran a 14.0 quarter mile before it will now run 13.1 assuming all other factors are the same :jawdrop: If this is true, then the new ratio coupled with the extra traction of the LSD means I should be able to get some really decent times in ;)

Well I was wrong it would do the 1/4 1.069x as fast. Using a little physics though I was able to plug in the new acceleration values and the distance of a 1/4 to find my new time, of 13.5 seconds. A half second shaved off isn't too bad considering that comes just from gear ratios ;) Of course this is assuming the car ran a 14.0 before the LSD install but if it ran slower then it'll shave off a bit more than .5 seconds.
