Rebuilding to EXACT OEM specs is expensive and difficult [parts and time wise].
Especially if bearings and rings must be recalculated and ordered. Many tolerances must be shipped from Japan. Price the sodium cooled exhaust valves and HLA, Springs, retainers, crankshaft, rods, and pistons First before deciding.
There are non oem head gasket kits.
ATL has 3 diffferent importers of JDM engines so we are able to physically view the pool and select [or not]............impossible to use domestic junkyard engines as US drivers abused them so.
90-93 engines have a plastic chain guide rail which must be up dated to all metal. Every engine must have front cover removed [rewquires new seal] to check if this has been done or calculate $500>1,000 in preliminery work just for that. Parts are $400 alone.
About 35 special rubber hoses are necessary to be replaced.
It will be a real learning experience.
Probably cheaper to fly [discounted coach] to Japan and tour their junkyards, select and ship one back in a bulk container.
The AUS/NZ and Brits do it but they are building race engines with different tolerance and expectations than OEM.
My oem engine is fine after 20.4 years and 327,000 miles but the oil was changed every 90 days without fail and Full syn was used for 15 of those years.
Only internal work was chain guides and oil chain. New injectors and a few coils. Valve covers use RTV for sealing before 94, so periodic reseals and front and rear seals are frequent.
The early cats are so expensively built that they still pass emissions.
Good luck.
