THIS WEEKEND I CAN FINALLY BUY MY RB20DET ENGINE THAT I BEEN SAVING FOR FOR ABOUT 3 YEARS.

i'm getting it from JDM engine depot that is in new jersery... I need your guys help.. I wanna make sure I get a the right and good engine.. So I may ask for them to do a compression test for me when I go there..

What would be good compression numbers and what else can i check to make sure I don't get screwed over and screwed out of $1,250 dollarrs.

thanks

I'm very nerves too..

I wanna make sure I check everything good before I buy the engine.. But since i'm new to rb's i need help. I for sure know i'm gonna replace the timing belt and oil pump right away.

But what should compression numbers be when I check the motor.

175 psi across is perfect 160-150 is acceptable any lower and dont bother.you dont need to change the oil pump, only if you plan on pulling the crank out and collaring it.

ehh i just wanna replace the oil pump just to make sure the old oil pump doesnt' blow out and also i wanna make sure i get good oil pressure.

so oil pressure and compression are the two things i wanna check before buying it this weekend..

Can i check for oil pressure with engine out?

and when you say 175psi is that for cold engine or warm?

some engine suppliers will do a leak down for you....I recomend that as well. But some suppliers (over here on the westcoast) pour ATF fluid into the cylinders before they do that compression check to "seal the rings". But this might be a way of cheating for the compression numbers to jump. But I wouldnt recomend a dry check, it can scar up the sleeves or worst. And check to see if they do a WOT compression as well, this will also raise up the numbers on the compression side with the TB open....good luck I hope my ramblings are useful?

ugh... how does one check compression without cranking motor? doesn't engine have to be cranked?

They will proably use a battery and "rig" it to the motor for it to crank over. Since that is all you will need to do in order to properly get compression to build.

WOT- WIDE OPEN THROTTLE (this means that they hold the throttle body open 100% so it can intake air into the combustion chamers.

ATF Fluid= AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID its mostly red in color, and is a little thinner then straight oil. They use it as a lubricant to seal up the rings so there wont be any compression seeps.

Its a little difficult to explain. Use the search button, Im sure they now how to do all these test. Good luck. BTW a leakdown test deals in some part of cylinder pressure. It lets you know of a leaking cylinder.
