bought a VLSD off of an R33 (4.11 gear ratio) with axels for $270 bucks here localy, put it in last night (and finished it up by actually putting the correct size bolts in today since the 6bolt bolts are a smaller diameter than the 5 bolt rear end bolts)

noticed a pretty big difference in acceleration, and my car feels like it is being pushed from both sides instead of just one (used to make my car veer slightly to one side of the other). not to mention high speed cornering is alot more fun all in all i think it is a pretty good upgrade.

i do have a question. i have heard that the skyline rear diffs were/are a little more robust (like you can go further HP wise with a skyline VLSD than you can with one from say a silvia or a J30) is there any truth to that .

I have access to a set of Nissan 4.63 ring/pinion...

I like my J30 (4.08) VLSD real well, wish it was a tiny bit lower ratio though... 4.36 would be sweeterness.

after looking through my GT-R service manual, the rear end is an R200 mechanical LSD.

So does this mean all you have to do is replace the two shafts coming outta the pumpkin and you can swap in any ring gear you want? Or do you even need to swap the shafts at all?

i have a feeling you'll need a different set of R200 shafts. The GT-R, and probably the other levels of Skyline, had a 6 bolt star pattern.

I think it's the same...r32, r33, j30, z32... all have r200 vlsd... just with different gearing and that it seems r32 r33 have a beefier and finned oil pan

Maybe im being dumb, but you are saying you need the shafts from the same type gear-type as the ring gear, right? Actually now that i say it to myself, of course you would have to. Are the viscous couplings the same in all r200's?

all stub axles from R200s are interchangable. The big thing is the bolt pattern to the axle.

The R33 doesn't have a viscous LSD though. It's a mechanical clutch type.

Thats weird. I dont mean i hijack here so ill end it now.

I wonder how the stub gears mesh correctly given the number of teeth would change on a different ratio ring gear. Or maybe im missing a piece of info...

this one was from a GTS-T i wonder if it is still a clutch type or a VLSD.

also, this one was a 5 bolt star pattern

the stub axles don't mesh with the ring gear. That would be the pinion gear's job. The stubs use splines to interact with the coupling units inside of the diff. They go into the rotating axis of the whole unit.

must.....have.....lsd....

Never had it on the top of my priority list until the snow kicked my *** this year. I see them for cheap(er) now-a-days, i have to wait till i pay off my wheels to get one (probably would be spring by then.

well, now that i think about it, i know mine is a VLSD (or i am at least 99% sure it is) because i got to thinking, and i saw a orange sticker on it that said "Viscous LSD" on it.

Um, I searched but can't find a solid answer for these last differential ratio's. What does it mean to have a lower or higher diffy ratio? Higher top end, or low end? Can someone inform me.

Yep. Lower ratio number, high end (not nessisarily better though...)

Higher ratio number, better low end.

i wonder if anyone has lucked out and gotten a mechanical LSD from a place like venus or whatever, people get aftermarket clutches in their clips all the time
