I finally got my Q on the road and the car runs great but the engine is making a low knocking noise at idle sounds like it is from the right side head. I cant belive how nice of a car it is to drive.

Can you describe the nose as best as you can.

When does this happen (Warm, cold...)?

What grade and make oil do you use?

What does the inside of the fill hole (Right valve cover) look like (Sludge, varnish...)?

Whats the oil pressure at 650-675 RPM's?

Any Hydraulic Lash Adjuster ticking noise?

It is a low knock it is there all the time. The engine is clean inside I had the cam coves off, and I replaced the timing chains and guides. I am using 10W30 oil. I ran Marvle mystery oil in the engine to try to stop the knocking. My 03 GMC pickup has a knock and it has been doing it for over 40,000 miles so if my Q is making some noise that is ok.

Post up a video of the noise.

Is the oil light on or whats the oil pressure with new oil and a filter when the vehicle is warm?

My ac compressor was noise when the ac was on I replaced the compresor. But the noise is a low knock at idle and and I can feel it in the valve cover it does tend to go away when I revv the engine. It may be the vvt sprocket I am a Jaguar tech and on the early jag. V8s the vvts would stick and wnen oil would get into them the noise would go away.

Connect an ACCURATE oil pressure gauge in place of oil sensor, [one that allows 1.0 psi resolution].
After engine is warn [hot] graph psi vs rpm................make sure 650 rpm idle [in drive- brakes on] is 14 psi. MAKE A GRAPH for PSI vs RPM increments up to 2000 rpm every 100 rpms and post here for evaluation!
Select your oil brand and grade to achieve at least 12 psi [worst case] even if that means running a 40, 45 [same brand blend], or even a 50.

Worst case conditions are extreme hot at a traffic light after an hour coming off interstate with brand new thin oil with new filter.

The thicker oil won't do any harm [in summer] except reduce MPG a small amount.

We have a few ragged Q which have been treated with oil thickeners [BG RD-7].

It's expensive changing oil and filter after only a few miles of driving but you might consider a couple more successive treatments with MMO. I had a similar ticking in my 94Q when I first bought it and it took a BG engine flush and 3 MMO treatments to finally quiet it down. IIRC I drove for 30 minutes after a BG flush and a day after adding MMO before changing the oil and filter.

I hope the knock you're hearing is a HLA "tick" and not a slightly bent rod from a previous owner's hydrolock incident. I'm pretty sure my 94Q died from hydrolocking (leaky injector o-ring) and even though it had a loud knock and the oil light was on the engine idled without shaking and revved as smoothly as if there was nothing wrong.

Pulling ECU codes will tell you a lot about what's wrong.

I do not think it is a rod my 03 GMC has been knocking for over 40k miles and it has never been a problem I may let it run for a while and then change the oil and filter, I own a repair shop and I can get oil and filters cheep.
