Well it runs but I have a few problems that I think all have to do with timing. Everything on this motor is bone stock, even exhaust. First off, on cold starts it runs really rough, idles at about 500rpms and when you give it throttle it bogs down and almost dies, after it warms up for a while it seems fine and actually idles between 850-1100. When i drive it it seems to hesitate between 3000-3500 under full throttle and doesnt start pulling till about 4500, second off, when I went to set my timing with a timing light i have to have the cas almost all the way retarded to be at 15btc at which it runs rough and idles bad. As I advance it it gets way smoother and idles better but is way past the timing marks. I dont understand how this can happen because when I set the timing belt it looked perfect and there is only one way the cas can go in. And on top of that crap, I was looking at it today and went to pull the cas out and broke off that half moon thing for the cas which was the reason I had to replace the exhaust cam when i first got the motor. I was able to line the cas up as close as i could and the car ran and the timing was the same as before i broke it. And also, There is a slight knocking sound that starts at about 2500rpms that seems to be coming from the timing cover. I also checked my ecu codes and got a 34 which is knock sensor which makes sense since the timing is too advanced. I have searched and read the faq and couldnt really find what i needed so any help would be appreictiated. thanks

are u sure the belt was done right? that can go in backwards... or jsut screwed up. I had this problem when i first got my det running. Take the cover off and check all the marks line up and the crank pulley is at its tdc mark. the belt moves, so just make sure the cam marks are oppisite and the pulley is at tdc!

Unplug your TPS while you set your timing.

I checked it the other day, It is all lined up right, I have a new timing belt on the way anyway so when I do it I will take extra care to make sure its absolutley perfect. And I didnt unplug my tps when I set my timing so I'm gonna go mess with it now, I will keep you guys posted. And also, has anyone else on here gotten by without that half moon thing on the exhaust cam, those things are dam fragile

First thing you wanna do is get that knock sensor connected. From what I've gathered, if this sensor is not connected correctly, the motor pulls timing. Hence why as you advance it, the car smooths out. I also had this issue. Once I got everything connected the right way, the car ran like a champ. Give that a try and see what symptons you have after that.

My half moon broke as well, and my CAS did th esame thing, I had to MAX it out to be anywhere near the 15deg btdc, it was impossible to get to 15deg btdc.

The sensor would jump the timing all over the place when you pushed on it etc, I replaced it with a new (used) cam sensor and it actually allows me to get the timing into spec range and it doesnt jump around.

My friend ran his car without a knock sensor on a ca18det for a year and a half with no problems. it only pulls timing IF the knock sensor tells teh computer its seeing knock.

Well I found that my knock sensor was un plugged some how but I plugged it back in and even heard it click but it does the same thing and im pretty sure its plugged in right. I still get a code 34 and I still have to almost fully retard the cas to get to 15btc. Could either my knock sensor or my cas be bad? I'm pretty sure that even though my half moon is broke the cas is lined up right. I also still hear that knocking sound around the timing cover, could that be setting off the knock sensor?

I just had a run in with the knock sensor. I have an 89 so it was a different issue. But I think maybe you should check the wiring and make sure it's wired right. I also made sure to use shielded wire.

As for the knock sensor, check continuity from the sensor plug to the pin on the ecu

Well my car wont even start now, its a wiring problem so the harness is coming out and being checked and i'm installing a new timing belt this week so hopefully it runs right after that.
