Title says it all :greenboun

WARNING: This is long :pface

I finished up enough of the swap to take the car for a spin. The hood won't close right now because I've got the stock R32 airbox connected until I buy a cone filter. The bumper isn't on, the wiring needs tidying up, cluster needs to be wired, etc, but I couldn't wait to finish all that ;)

Since I don't have a tag, insurance, or any sort of exhaust system yet I decided to only play around in my driveway. I made a few easy passes down and back up just to make sure everything was running ok. Then I decided to be a bit more aggressive and revved it up a bit to get a little chirp out of the back tires.

I was happy for the day and started to roll her back in when my dad came over to see how the swap was going :D He wanted to take it down the driveway once so I handed him the keys. The first time down he took it easy...I thought he was done so I started to clear out the garage to get the car back in. Next thing I know I hear the car rev up to 3-4k so I turn around just in time to see him dump the clutch. The car lurched forward like a bat out of hell, leaving a 25 foot long black mark on the pavement. :oy:

After he came back I got pissed at him for really pushing my car before I had even had a chance to really break it in, swap out the old gas for some new 93 (no telling what was in it), and tie down all the loose crap in the engine bay. Then he said he was sorry and didn't mean to, and that he only pressed the gas pedal down about halfway. At this point I was in awe :shocked2.

Tomorrow I'm going to try and get the front bumper back on, as well as ghetto rid a 2nd AC condenser fan to cool the motor until I can get some good electric ones. Then I may take her to a big parking lot and really see what she'll do :ylsuper

Hopefully I'll get some pics and video up in the next few days

It's an RB20. Be careful, because the very first time I took mine out, I did some crazy sh*t and got sideways around a corner. I didn't have any interior or a radar detector and got slapped w/ $300 worth of tickets. ah well, it was worth it. Good luck.

Well I have issues with not being able to keep it below certain RPM's for a while. So my first drive out I drove around for about 15 mins, when I decided it was warm enough I put it down, I loved it, 1st and second were gone in a cloud of smoke and my *** end in the other lane......oh memories.

Well today I was finally able to get a tag and insurance and get the car out on the road. The car seems to be running really well. The boost gauge is showing about 10.5 lbs and the air/fuel gauge is pegged rich when I press the throttle down at least 25% or so. I guess the extra .5 lbs of boost is from upgrading to a 3" cat-back exhaust system.

Anyway, the turbo starts to spool up around 2700 rpm or so I believe. It builds boost very quickly :) The stock turbo is sooo much louder than I thought it'd be. You can really hear it spooling up over the sound of the engine. The stock bypass valve is also pretty dang loud. It's louder than my buddy's RX7's Apexi blow off valve. So much for not attracting unwanted attention :D Oh well.

Overall I'm very pleased with the car so far

Nope I was never unhappy with the 20. So far I love it! I've still got a few bugs to sort out though. The car is misfiring pretty bad in the upper rpms, but only if I really get on the gas. If I take it easy it can climb all the way to redline just fine. So I've got to figure that out.

hmmm. i thought i read in another thread that you quarters were low and you could only run a 14.0.

Nope haven't ran a 1/4 yet...I think that's Apex_7 you're thinking of. My 1/4 would be way slower than 14.0 right now. 1st and 2nd gear aren't really usable above 4000 rpm because it keeps cutting out on me. I dunno what the problem is. The A/F gauge stays pegged rich all the way up so I don't think it's because of not enough fuel. Maybe I have a bad ground somewhere (hopefully). Guess I should also change spark plugs and see if that helps.

On a more positive note, 3rd gear and above usually don't misfire. I started in 4th gear today and punched it, and after about 4500 rpm I had a hard time pulling my head off of the seat. This car will get up and move pretty well.

what spark plugs are you using? I just used the NGK 9's and those worked fine. 1st and 2nd are pretty useless in my car cause usually the tires are up in smoke. Are you misfiring or is your fuel cutting out? MIne has been sputtering lately.

Well I was using the spark plugs that came with my clip, but today I grabbed some Denso spark plugs for the 300ZX N/A. These are the standard cheap copper and only cost me $10 for all 6, but I just wanted to make sure they'd even work in the car. The spark plugs came gapped at 1.0 mm so I left it at that. With the new plugs the car seems to run a bit better, but still misfires (I think) in 1st and 2nd.

Should I try some platinum or iridium spark plugs? And if so, what gap should I run? I heard 0.8 mm was what I should use but just want to make sure.

Also, honestly, I don't know how to tell if the car is misfiring or if fuel is cutting out. I just assumed that since my A/F gauge shows full rich I was getting plenty of fuel. When this misfire or fuel cut happens the car jerks some and makes a bit of a popping sound.

I can't hear any pinging...but I guess that doesn't mean it's not there. When it happens there's a major loss of power so I'm assuming the ECU is probably pulling timing like crazy. Maybe the answer to all this is to check my timing. The only problem is I've never done that before and well have basically no clue how to do it on a distributorless motor :(

pullthe coil pack for plug one, use a normal plug wire to extend it.replug it back in and then use the timing light on that plug wire that you used to make a extention. then check it the normal way.and which part of GA do yo ulive in?

also one note , a knock sensor causes the timing to retard a bit when it senses detination so there is a big power lose. thats why i was asking about the pinging. but it usually happens down low in the revs.

Thanks for the timing help. I'll try it in a few days when I can get my hands on a timing light. For now I've just got the CAS set about in the center.

I live in Carrollton, GA which is probably 35 miles or so west of Atlanta.

As far as pinging goes, this only happens > 4000 rpm so I don't think it'd be detonation. The car does just seem to cut out though. And the weird thing is it does it almost all the time in 1st and 2nd gear, 3rd rarely does it, and I haven't been able to get 4th to do it yet. So at this point I've basically got no clue what it is.

I know yuo were saying that the car had old gas in it before... Have you changed it to normal 93?

Also check grounds, weaker spark can cause that..

Finally I know you said your car is running rich... how rich are we talking, like last LED on the gauge or what?
