Well I was really hoping to turbo my KA engine, however that all fell through. I finally got the suspension where I wanted it for now and had a lot of the pre-turbo stuff bought (clutch, fuel control), basicaly everything the kit didn't have. But I gave the car to my brother, so I decided to buy a new car. I've always loved these cars and I know they're not known for their reliability but I'm in the army and I only drive it for pleasure. Not like I'm going to be driving to formation. Plus I will have it paid off in 3 years which is when I get out. So all I have to pay for while in the army is insurance and the car. Hence why I'm doing it now when I don't have topay for school or any kind of living expenses. It's a 1993 Mazda RX-7 R1 with just under 39000 miles and is completely stock. I love it and my girlfriend wants me to write my will with the car left to her any day now. I only ever wanted about 300 hp so it won't take much to reach that on this car, plus I can use some of the stuff I bought for the 240 on it. Good thing widebands aren't car specific.

You are going to pay for alot more than "expenses and insurance" with an FD3S RX-7...

How about a shxt load of maintenance costs and a future rebuild?!??

not if he takes care of it right the first time

rotaries can be very reliable, you just have to take care of them

talk to rico or Alan, theyll both tell you more than i could

Well, maybe (big maybe), but its a 1993 model, and you will never know for sure. I would stay away from that thing. FC's are more my cup of tea.

Edit: sorry, Its a great and fun car, good luck!

You sir, are a bad ***. FD RX-7 is, in my honest opinion, the nicest looking car to ever come out of Japan (with the R34 being the MEANEST looking). Congradulations and have fun!!

Those are friggen' sweet. I came so close to owning one about a year ago.

Just remember to upgrade your cooling system before upgrading the motor... I'd even do it before suspension. As long as you don't overheat it your car should give you quite a few years of pleasure.

If it does go out on you then if you still just want 300hp you can swap in a 13b triple rotor (or whatever they're called) and hit 300 NA.

Have fun.

I'm not too worried about the rebuild, I'm not going to make anymore power on this engine probably. I want to buy a second engine and build it up on the side, that way when this one goes out I can just swap in the other and then start to rebuild this one. But that's not till I find room for a second engine. I've talked with a shop near here, A-Spec tuning, they do a lot of rotary stuff and also a few 240's (they had an rb30 in one and an rb26 in the other.) They gave me a good idea what to get right off the bat. Basicaly just gauges to monitor temps, radiator, intercooler and exhaust. The exhaust is a biggy because it helps get the heat out of the engine bay, especially the downpipe. Other than that I'm just reading the forums and seeing what is the best too do. Still new to the RX-7 community so it's fun learning all the acronyms and just being really confused in general.

Thanks for the all the compliments, as far as the FC thing, my friend loves FC's and I love FD's. So hopefully when he gets a real job we'll have a nice looking one of each next to each other.

I miss my 240 a little though, the springs on the RX-7 are really soft. Plus the car sounds like a really powerful vacuum, not the sexiest or intimidating of sounds.

Hell if I'm thinking of going to a 20b I might as well go bigger and see if there's a way to get like two 20b's together =) Not that I ever intend to. Wonder how many rotors it takes to make an NA torque monster.

Beautiful. Before my Kouki, I had a '93 FD. Red, black leather. FD's are the most impressive car out there. Who would think that a 1.3L engine could put out 255hp from the factory! I was in the process of doing a 3mm apex seal rebuild, and all that good stuff, but I gave up on the whole ordeal. You made the PERFECT choice by getting a low mileage FD. I can't wait to see what you're going to be doing to it. If you're looking for 300HP, I'd suggest taking a look at the '99 Efini turbos- they bolt right up, but will put you at around 285, and are able to support more boost, and obviously produce more power than the stock turbos. Get yourself a FMIC, downpipe, high-flow cat, cat-back exhaust, hell, you could even go for the Power FC, and you'd be well over 300RWHP. Anyways- treat it nicely, and it'll treat you nicely I love rotary engines.Good luck and keep up updated!

LOL, thats in my sig. I've always thought they sounded weird, but too rx-7s are the sexiest car from japan besides the skyline. So i hope you have fun with it and thanks for serving our country I appreciate it as i'm sure everyone else does also!

Once again, nice ride

Yeah I like the sound of them with an exhaust but stock it's just funny to me. It's like driving a fast whindup toy. I'm talking with greg about his exhaust, I liked the BRM on my 240 so I was thinking of giving the one a try on the rx-7 but I'm going to listen around for a bit first.

I've heard about the Power FC but the shop recommended microtek, and it makes no difference to me so I'd rather go with what the shop prefers to tune. Then again I might try and track down something for the AEM EMS. I'm a ways off from a stand alone so I need to just get the cooling taken care of. My goal is to be able to go to autocrosses all day and not have to sit out any times to let my car cool down.

For turbos I'll either go like a couple GT turbos or I think you can bore out the stock ones and put the ball bearing center sections in. Like I said, I'm just reading everything I can get my hands on so most stuff in my head isn't sorted out yet. I've always had a fetish for rotary engines so it should be interesting no matter what. Not to mention I like the lack of parts when putting one together. Lots of seals but atleast I'm not sitting there getting mad at valve shims.

make sure to keep the cooling up to par with the power rotaries go BANG when they get too hotalso up grade the ecu when ever you put on new mods rx-7's have been known to detonate and break things just by exhaust intake and fmic with no computer upgrade

wow, that is a sexy car. And as long as you keep the temp down the car will be fine. Also keep an eye out for oil loss. Thats the other death to rotaries.

YEEAA FOR MAZDA!!

i still love nissan guys

Nice buy. I like the fd, but prices have sky-rocketed. Remember to do the necessary upgrades before going wild, or the following diagram will become a reality:

NICE FD!!

I'd say that's a trade up, so long as you take care of it. Amazing cars, I used to be a regular at a garage that specialized in rotaries. I didn't know shxt from shxt, but I helped them take engines and cars apart. They're amazing automobiles.

Bah, who needs seals anyways? I've heard a lot of good stuff about the V8 swaps into RX-7s. However, like I said I have a rotary fetish. I don't think it's a sin to put one in there, I just don't want one. The american big blocks are pretty much the cheapest way to get big power. Not to mention it's almost impossible to find a shop that doesn't work on them. Where as it's the opposite for rotaries, especially out in the middle of nowhere. Despite that, I love how the car revs. It's very smooth and revs faster than my 240 even with a light weight flywheel. Wonder how fast this thing will rev with a lightweight flywheel on it. Still no cupholders though, guess that's a luxury I'll never get to experience.

Thanks, but I wish. Bomex still has one of the hottest cars in my opinion. I love the color of it especially. If only my driving record was as clean as my car...

The car is still stock so I can't really brag about it. Anybody can throw a bunch of money at a car, even if a shop does the work you're still putting your ideas into it. But with a stock car it's not like I can go around saying I designed it. I'm just lucky enough to find middle aged men that have to sell their cars to buy ones for their kids that won't kill them and take advantage of that situation. You should've seen how mad his son was at me when I left with the RX-7.

As far as rebuilding and boring out the turbos- I'd just stick with the '99 turbos- nice and new, from the factory. Or you can go all the way with a T78 or even the massive T88 single turbo upgrade. Good idea to take care of cooling. Your first mod MUST be a downpipe, they're the initial cause of death in FD's.. Then go for the Fluidyne or Koyo radiator.. FMIC.. And since you've got an R1, you've already got the stock oil cooler, but you can upgrade to a larger, or even dual oil coolers. Of course, intake is another key part. I had dual Apexi intake on my red FD and it looked great! They were made for boost! 20B's will put out craploads of torque- but it's not as easy as everyone says to swap 'em. I'd stick with your 13B and build on that. Again, good luck with the rotary beast!

Way back in the day.. 10 years ago a friend of mine father owned a toyota dealership actually a few dealer ships.. Anyways the used car lots were our playground. If their was snow any used 4x4's was our weekend toy. If the ground was dry It was whatever sport car we could find. The supra's was our fav untill somone traded in a 93 rx7. The things we did to that car were horrible. Till this day I feel guilty to whoever bought that car. If I could buy one it would be in my driveway yesterday. Man I miss those tight curved hilly back roads MD had to offer.

We Drove a few 300z's I dunno I just had too much respect for that car to rag it too bad. Peeled out a few 360's in george town.
