If I didn't have to work--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------In the health care debate in Washington, D.C., it's clear: If the insurance companies win, we lose! For years, American insurance companies have been more about corporate greed than patient need. Insurance executives have lined their pockets at record rates while our health insurance premiums went up three times faster than wages and four times faster than general inflation. It's a crime that insurance companies rack up profits by denying patients treatment even when doctors recommend it, by discriminating against people with pre-existing conditins, and by keeping premiums and out-of-pocket costs high so that care is unaffordable even for those who have insurance. It's a crime that 64% of all bankruptcies are caused by medical debt. It's a crime that every 12 minutes someone dies because an insurance company denies them care.Enough is enough! It's time we send a clear message to insurance company CEOs and executives - "Stop Denying Our Care!" Join us on Tuesday, October 6th at 12:00 p.m. for an "Insurance Crimes Against Patients" Protest outside of the corporate offices of Horizon BlueCross BlueShield New Jersey. Help us raise public awareness of insurance industry bad practices! Agreed.

However, I strongly believe that if you, as an American, have an unmet need, the ANSWER is to determine what you, personally, can do to address it, rather than wasting time carrying a sign and making a nuisance of yourself.

Here's an idea - Brush up your resume. Go to night school. Pick up a second job. Start your own business. Develop a skill. Weed out unnecessary distractions. Get involved in your community. Participate in local politics. Network. Learn. Grow.

Basically, FIND A WAY to navigate this world that satisfies your needs without relying on someone else to provide for you.

^^I agree with all this.

BUT, in some cases, certain people are just wholly incapable of providing for themselves.

It can either be an 80 year old destitute terminal cancer patient or a mentally retarded 30 year old with no extant family, stuff like that. They can't go to night school, and so we're either going to have the state do something about it or we let them die. I'm pretty darwinian most of the time, but in this case, I vote "we all pay for it".

Of course, 99% of the people who want someone else to cover their care don't fit into this category of those in extreme need. 99% of them CAN do something about it to improve their own situation.

It's very tricky....with any situation where some people are going to get a free ride by necessity, you'll have a million more people who want to scam the same free ride even though they don't need it.

Those people are about as numerous as the "cases of incest, rape, or imminent danger to the mother".

We don't write public policy for outliers. We also don't exclude them.
