After reading some contradicting posts, I'd really like to get to the bottom of this subject. I'm currently building a forged piston DOHC engine using Arias 8.8:1 pistons, knifed crank, balanced rotating assembly, .020 overbore, ported head, combustion chambers modified, block O-ringed, ARP studs, etc.

However, in rod selection, I'm still torn. I remember reading about Ivan making 500+ on stock, shotpeened rods, then I recently read that stock rods are notorious for breaking when used with forged slugs.

So, what's the final say? I don't plan on making over 420whp. Would it be appropriate to have the stock rods shotpeened / cryotreated? I really hate to spend ANOTHER $600+ on rods if I can make the stockers work just fine, consistantly.

This is a car that will be street driven here and there and drag raced a lot.

Thanks in advance.

i've been thinking of going the same route and i was planning on doing it a bit differently. I wanted to get brand new oem rods and then have them shotpeened just for a little added security. i see new oem rods for like 100 bucks or so. idk i've searched but never quite find a straight forward answer. obviously though forged is the way to go but damn the prices will kill me. i'm still undecided personally on what i'm going to do.

I would not trust the stock rods past 300hp, and even then I wouldn't feel completely comfortable. Even though there are a few people who have had thier rods last under those high hp strains, it's just not worth it. Just save the extra 600 dollars for that added piece of mind.

Interestingly enough, tonight I landed a private sale. Eagle H-beam rods for $318.00. Guess it's going to be Eagle rods for me.

Thanks again!

Wasnt there, supposedly, a small batch of eagle ka24 rods manufactured? I remember this from like a year ago, some people did indeed have them but eagle never continued with it.

But maybe im wrong.

Put rods in the motor... All the work and money you have spent on everything else and it can all go down the drain with one bad rod...

What if you could buy a set of forged rod for $549.00... Would you be interested?

600 bucks or a few months down the road another 2400 for a rebuild... If your shooting for 420 whp i would not skimp on the stock rods. And it seems like your doing the whole deal here so why forget about the rods, There the second part of the engine that transfers power SO THAT MEANS THERE DAMN IMPORTANT.

I believe they are custom made by AMS/turbo240.

Our new Turbo240 rods are CNC machined from 4340 steel forgings. They are H beam design for strength and light weight. They are then shot peened for improved fatigue life. Small ends are bronze bushed for full floating wrist pins and precision honed. Big ends are precision honed and use ARP 2000 rod bolts exclusively. These rods are the lightest rods available for the KA but have the strenght you need.

These rods were designed for customers shooting for 550 whp or less. Above that level, we still recomend Crower rods (till our extreme duty rod is released). Rods weigh between 600 and 610 grams which is much lighter than stock, crower (680 grams) and Pauter (700 grams) and will reduce the strain on your bearings but the trade off is in ultimate strenght. This is the reason for the WHP rating recomendation.

The primary machining is done overseas but they are finish machined, inspected and weight matched here in the USA. We have 9 sets of rods here in stock that we have personally opened, inspected, weighed, measured, and had sonic checked. We stand behind these rods 100% and are very excited to offer them to you.

We have 25 more sets on order that should be here in 6 weeks. If you dont get in on the initial 9 sets, we are taking pre-orders on the next 25 sets with a 50% deposit.

Pricing is $549.00 plus shipping.
