i've read that the final gear of a 240SX is 4.08. wanted to know if i can change it with any other car for a lower final gear. 300ZX is about 3.69 right?? is there anything in between 4.08 and 3.69?? 3.69 would be too low.

thanks guys

Actually, when discussing rearend ratios, a higher numerical value equals a lower final drive.

A Q45 (g50) HAS A 3.54 RATIO, A j30 HAS A 3.96, AND AN OPEN DIFF ON A 240SX IS 4.08. 300ZX n/a is 4.08, twin turbo is 3.69. (oops sorry caps)

There's a negligible amount of difference between a 3.96 and 4.08 (not noticeable).

What do you want to achieve? That'll help us help you.

Is there a numerically higher ratio final drive that isn't too much $?

I think a 4.4 or 4.7 would be kind of fun.....

Available Ratios that can be used and easily found...(there are more out there, but these are proven and can be swapped in w/out too much hassle)

4.63 ---> Nissan Motorsport Ring and Pinion set4.36 ---> Certain 180SXs in Japan & Nissan Motorsports4.08 ---> USDM 240SXs & 300ZXs (N/A only)3.92 ---> 92-96 Infiniti J30s (92-94 had 5 bolt axles, 95-96 had 6)3.69 ---> S15 and certain overseas Manual S14s as well as 97-01 Q45s3.54 ---> 90-94 Q45s (requires a Driver side Q45 axle for the passenger side and a Driver side Z32 TT axle for the Drivers side)

NOTE: The 300ZX Twin Turbo pumpkin (R230V) cannot be used in an S chassis due to it's size.

well I need more top speed. on the 1/4 mile i'm hitting about 7k rpm in my 4th gear. I've got about 500+rpm left before shift but, i will be upgrading to a bigger turbo so I was wondering how much rpm is left without shifting to 5th gear. shifting to 5th would be overkill just for a bit

Is this part expensive? And can it handle xxx power?

if you get the shorter gear... say 4.6~ then you would have to shift into 5th. the higher the number, the faster your rpms will run out.

If installed properly it will be able to handle the same amount of torque as the stock ring and pinion set.

They are pricey. 4.36 can be found fairly cheap.

Remember: Tire size effectively changes gear ratio!! This is another way to adjust your overall ratio if you only need it at the track.

*Also, the higher the numerical gear ratio, the smaller the pinion becomes, thus reducing its strength.

I'm thinking it's more a Nissan Motorsports USA part, but I'm not sure. Courtesy Nissan sells them I believe.

The 4.36s can be found already in a pumpkin on Ebay, etc.
