I checked my air filter at 16,000 miles. I believe the owners manual recommends a 30,000 interval for air filter changes.
Anyway, the air filter was extremely dirty. I have always replaced my own filters and most of my cars can go 20-30k miles without the air filter getting very dirty. The air filter in the Versa was loaded with debri and quite a bit of sandy material. I replace my filters once a year which represents approx 20,000 miles of driving.
I believe the reason for this is the location of the air intake opening right up by the grill. There is a lot of fine sandy debri that gets stirred up by traffic especially in the winter when roads get sanded and salted. This is getting pulled into the air system because the opening is right there at the front of the car.
Based on what I have seen, I strongly recommend a 15,000 mile change interval for the air filter for the Versa. I buy the filter at the dealership. All of the filters I have looked at in the parts stores, are all very poor quality filters made in China. Why try to save a buck or two and risk unneccessary wear on the engine due to bad quality filters?
The Versa air filter is by far the easiest air filter to change on any car I have owned. Squeeze in on the clips and it pops out. It takes all of thirty seconds once you see how it opens. Don't pay someone to do this. DIY.
