Quick question, I've never done this before but if I just change the filter I shouldn't loose to much oil since most of the oil will have drained into the sump. Am I correct?

I'm asking because I just saw a video regarding fram filters http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kX0xrqvlsNI

I haven't used fram for the longest time because of their build quality but I happened to have an extra one from an oil/filter special at the local part store. I generally use wix over the years but that video was a reality check.

What do you think?

I think you can replace the filter alone, just top off afterwards obviously. I'd wait for the car to cool down and as you said most of the oil to drain back into the pan, then replace the filter. This thread on BITOG agrees, just do it when the engine is completely cold.

If I follow your logic, you want to change the filter because of what you have seen on youtube... Then you should also assume that if the filter did not do it's job, then your oil is dirty too.... Then you should change the oil too.... no ?

I have been using fram high mileage filters since the beginning with my truck... If you change at every 5000km, you will be ok... I'm going on 240,000km and the engine is running as new... mind as well change the oil too if you're gonna go through all this trouble anyway for the filter.... my 2cents

Not all Frams have crappy construction. I think the "orange can of death" is the one to be avoided, though.

Yeah, I have the orange can of annihilation. But from another forum people say it should be ok so I'll just leave in in there since I did the oil change a few days ago.

Yeah, don't worry about it. You'll be fine with that filter for one OCI, but I would switch to something more well constructed for the future.

I just placed my annual order from wix, got some oil, air, and couple more cabin filters. Thanks!
