Hello! I just purchased a Onyx Blue 2008 Versa SL with CVT last week. Yesterday was my first gas fill-up and when the attendant went to fill it, the pump would click off after about 10 seconds, then gas would spill out of the tank! This happened twice then I got out of the car to see what was wrong. Mind you, I had the ignition ON (engine off) when he was trying to fill up. When I turned the ignition completely OFF, the gas finally started entering the tank correctly. I know you should not have the ignition on at all when you fill up but this is the first car that ever happened to me. Anyone else have this problem? Has anyone tried to fill up there Versa with the ignition ON but the engine not running?

First of all welcome to the Versa Forum.

I have tried it before listening to the radio well filling up. I know that it can cause someone to ignite or something and your car will blow up (so I've heard). But I tend to do it anyways...not very often.

I remember before I was driving a customers car and I needed a car for the day so I took this car. It needed some gas so inorder to fill it up I had to fill up the car with the engine still on because if I turned it off I would need a jump again. So I fill the gas tank without turning off the car...nothing happened no problems...just wouldn't suggest it to anyone else.

I've noticed on both of my V's that when you move the key from OFF to ON, after a moment there is a noise of some sort of component being moved in the rear of the vehicle. I wonder, based on your description, if there is a flap that closes over the tank when the car's ignition is ON?

In any case, you are not supposed to fill your tank with the ignition in the ON position. Technically, you're not even supposed to have it in the ACC position because a spark CAN cause ignition of fuel vapors. It's incredibly rare, but it happens even to this day.
