i know i will need to file fit my rings to the proper gap but was wondering if i NEED a ring filer or can i just use a hand file and do small incriments of filing. The gap i should aim for is about .017" correct?

did you go with stock bore? i did and i only had to file the second ring on all pistons. i checked every single one though. put one ring in at a time for its desired cylinder, push it in the cylinder evenly with the piston upside down. then take a feeler gauge a measure the gap. i just went for the clearances the FSM said. to file the ones i did have to file, i put a hand file in a vice. grabbed the ring from both ends and compressed both of them together against the file, and only file going from the outside in (if that makes sense to you). its so you dont have any burs on the cylinder wall side. now it should make sense that i said that. do you have a FSM? all rings require different gaps.

I have .020" over pistons. The gap on all the rings (1st and 2nd comp. rings is about .010") So i need to file them down. I think i understand what your saying on the filing there j-z. What did you set your gap to?

i just gapped them to what the fsm suggested. if ya want i can post up what it says, but i dont know if the gap for your rings should be different because of the oeverbore. wish i could explain it better about the filling, but i think once you have the file setup in the vice and youre holding the ring like i described youll completely understand which way to go so you dont have and sharp burs on the cylinder wall side.

Should be .022 according to ivan ( turbo240 )for arias pistons, (great guys) that is ideal for turbo boosted 300-450 range more than that and you should go .024 at the risk of some blowby but a monster. Pistons will swell and the rings need a gap under boost or you will score the cylinder walls. I am currently bulding a s14 monster from the ground up for our dealership and will be posting all the pics off all the nismo prouducts along with the turbo240 turbo and fuel sytem for my car.

well i set my gap at .018" today.... but i can alway go to .022"

Question on installing the rings, the # on the top of the ring should face up to the top of piston correct?

also, Do you guys file fit the oil rings as well? or just make sure they don't overlap on the clyinders? I put the oil rings in there and there was about a .007" gap.... will they expand under heat?

numbers are always on top. i would suggest refilling them and make sure they float around nicely, remove all burs. do not file fit the oil rings leave them alone. only the top two.

Turob engines gap both top and bottom rings .022.

How do you know which one is the top ring and which one is the bottom ring?

On the ring itself wether the top or bottom ring how do you tell which side is up?

Sorry for the stupid questions but there is no documention explaining that in the box. Ordered from AMS Monday at lunch and by Wednesday night my box arrived. Also got the AMS rods perty:)

Never mind I called Ivan.

N stamp on the ring points to the top of the piston. The Top ring is the narrow ring. The Bottom ring is the wider ring.Rods do not matter which way you point them.Rods torque to 45 lbs with the lube provided with the rods.
