quick question on file fitting rings... i was reading the "how to build a ka24de" on ka-t.org and wanted to make sure i am understanding the process of file fitting rings. when you file a ring, you file the opening in the ring to the specs of the pistons?

Ive never done it before, but my understanding is yes- you file right there in the break in the ring, to the specs of your engine bore. Its a trial/error thing, unless you have some special tools. Correct me if I'm wrong.

It's an UBER PITA. I did it with mine but I liked knowing that if it got ****ed up, it was me that did it. And yes you have the right idea, ask Ivan as to what spec to put it at, that's what I did. I called him.

did you use a ring file? do u have to buy one or can u use another type of file? should the piston rings already be filed from the maker? and did you use a feeler gauge to measure the gap? sorry for so many questions but i just want to get things very clear.

the ring file is a special tool that lets you file the ring while its already in the cylinder, if you dont have it then you need to keep taking it out and putting it back in to check the gap by trial and error. i just got my new rings in yesterday, and im waiting for te bearings from turbo240 to come in...ill take some picks next week for ya.

Kind of a question and a comment. For those of you who have built up their bottom ends, have you had to actually file the rings? I've only worked with JE pistons before and when I checked it, the rings were all perfectly sized.

If you have had different experiences, perhaps we can share these. Make sure to list where you got your rings(brand) and pistons if they came as a set.

This is the first bottom end i am going to assemble. I am going to double check the space between the rings to make sure they are within spec, and i just want to know how to do it.

I used SuperTech 9:1's. I file fit mine according to Ivan's specifications.

Can't remember I scribbled it down on a piece of paper and went to work. Give him a call at AMS I am sure he will give you the same advice.
