Ok this may seem really ghetto but I dont care, it works perfect for what I wanted to do. Also if people have done this already please excuse me. This may work really well for owners who want to try the car before buying a HICAS eliminator.
Note this will only work with the hydraulic HICAS, not the later electric SUPER HICAS.
Heres the scenario. I like HICAS on my Q, at high speeds it makes the car handle great and really adds stability to the car. However at low speeds, particulary at auto-crosses i think its more detrimental than helpful, so i figured id like to at least try it without HICAS. I dont want to get rid of HICAS, but I only want it sometimes.
I figured there had to be a way to force it into failsafe mode, thus keeping the rear wheels straight all the time, as if it wasnt there. I tried unplugging the control unit, and while that worked I also lost power steering, not a good thing for a fat-arse car like the Q.
So I started looking into the FSM what sensors I could try and mess with to fool the computer into going into failsafe. To make a long story short, the easiest sensor to get to was the PS fluid level sensor.
When the PS fluid gets low, it drops that little plunger thing and CLOSES the circuit, forcing FAIL SAFE. When failsafe is entered, there is a valve that forces the rear wheels to stay centered all the time.
So, all you have to do is unplug the connector for the PS and then jump the terminals. This will force FAIL SAFE and thus its gonna be golden.
I think im going to wire up a switch into the cabin so I can turn HICAS on and off whenever I want...
