Ok this may seem really ghetto but I dont care, it works perfect for what I wanted to do. Also if people have done this already please excuse me. This may work really well for owners who want to try the car before buying a HICAS eliminator.

Note this will only work with the hydraulic HICAS, not the later electric SUPER HICAS.

Heres the scenario. I like HICAS on my Q, at high speeds it makes the car handle great and really adds stability to the car. However at low speeds, particulary at auto-crosses i think its more detrimental than helpful, so i figured id like to at least try it without HICAS. I dont want to get rid of HICAS, but I only want it sometimes.

I figured there had to be a way to force it into failsafe mode, thus keeping the rear wheels straight all the time, as if it wasnt there. I tried unplugging the control unit, and while that worked I also lost power steering, not a good thing for a fat-arse car like the Q.

So I started looking into the FSM what sensors I could try and mess with to fool the computer into going into failsafe. To make a long story short, the easiest sensor to get to was the PS fluid level sensor.

When the PS fluid gets low, it drops that little plunger thing and CLOSES the circuit, forcing FAIL SAFE. When failsafe is entered, there is a valve that forces the rear wheels to stay centered all the time.

So, all you have to do is unplug the connector for the PS and then jump the terminals. This will force FAIL SAFE and thus its gonna be golden.

I think im going to wire up a switch into the cabin so I can turn HICAS on and off whenever I want...

Pretty clever, if I say so myself.

Although I'd question whether or not disabling HICAS for autoX is a wise idea. Im not sure how the HICAS on a Q functions, but on an S13, at low speeds the HICAS will toe the rear wheels opposite the direction of the turn, allowing the car to rotate more quickly. If it's the same way on a Q, you may have shot yourself in the foot: anything that'll help a huge car rotate is a boon!

The only reason im doing this is so i can TRY it. The reason im trying this is on quick turns at moderate speeds, say at 40 or so, i get some major understeer but if you try and throttle steer it, it SNAPS into uncontrollable oversteer really fast. Someone suggested to me that HICAS was causing my understeer to snap oversteer. It may be a hell of a lot of fun when your just playing around in a parking lot, but killing cones doesnt help my cause, even though the look of terror in seeing a 4000lb car sliding sideways is always priceless..

The sway bars i have on the car should put it VERY close to neutral... 28mm front/20mm rear.

Im not sure what speed HICAS switches from opposite to same to front wheels Theres nothing in the FSM that actually tells how the system operates....

HOW ARE YOU GUYS?JUST WONDERING IF CONFUSSING THE P/STEERING SENSOR WORKED?i HAVE JUST BEEN GIVEN A R32 SKYLINE TO DRIFT AND I NEED TO DISABLE THE HICAS TODAY FOR THE DRIFT COMP I'M IN TOMORROW AND I CAN'T AFFORD THE LOCKING SYSTEM. IF YOU COULD LET ME KNOW HOW YOU DID IT AND HOW YOU JUMPED THE TERMIALS I HOPEFULLY DO IT TODAY.THANKS MATECHRIS.

its pretty obvious. Theres a wire coming off the PS res. Follow that wire to the connector. Unplug the connector and jump the terminals.
