Havana-AP -- He's 77, is keeping up his regimen of running and swimming, and will live to 140 years. That's the word from Cuban President Fidel Castro's doctor.

I did Semester at Sea and Cuba was my last stop. We actually MET Castro, and he gave about a six hour speech. The guy didn't sit down or even take a sip of water the whole time. This was in 2001. He also signed a box of Romeo y Julietas for a friend of mine, which was pretty pimp-tacular.

Not a fan of the guy, but he does have a following down there.

Did he get to take them back with him? You could sell that for a MINT! Nothing like a good cuban cigar to calm the nerves.

I think Cuba is better off with him in power. Cuba has a low illiteracy rate, low unemployment, and the economy and government as a whole is more strong and stable than that of other Latin American countries. I think all these sanctions and restriction on travel/sendign money to Cuba is stupid and this grudge we have needs to end.

Anyway, yeah that was a badass fall.

Yup. I hate it when people say stuff like "damn commies" blah blah blah. Many people fail to remember how the U.S. was VERY supportive of communism in the 19th century. Also must point out that we have very strong economic relations with China and *gasp* they are also communists. Although capitalism is a major underlying part of their society now, the government still appoints and dictates who gets what in terms of jobs, etc.

You forgot to mention the oppresion, mass murder, kidnapping, and imprisonment of people who speak against him. They don't actually like castro, they pretend to out of fear. Why do you think so many of them swim over here.

He killed thousands of political oponents (Batista, etc.), like any other dictator would. He established communism and that benefited the lower working class as opposed to just the upperclass. The reason why the U.S. hates him so much is because he didn't allow their preponderance to intimidate him into playing the retarded brother.

Viki, what your saying is great on paper, but things arent as good as one would think. Remember, the grass is always greener...

Free healthcare, but most people are too far away from a real hospital to get any help.

Free education, but no schools, no teachers, and no materials.

Free food, free electricity, free water.

Food: rationed to the poor in small amountsElec.: Turned off at sundown and when not essential.Water: undrinkable

How bout, when the Pope visited was the only year that the common Cuban people could celebrate Christmas....

Where are you getting this from? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE show me proof of such statements because every single publication I've read on statistics on human development in Cuba has been positive.

96% adult literacy rate. Less than 5% infant death. Life expectancy is 78. I mean, these may just be numbers and sure they look good on paper, but I don't think it'd be possible without schools, water, and good healthcare, don't you think?

Anyway, I am heading out now. Have a good weekend everyone.

We dont know truth, til we see it with our own eye.....

Being of cuban descent but born a US citizen, I have been to Cuba a few times. I have videos of the "TV" areas compared to where the people really live.

There are places in Cuba that you can mistake for South Beach, but thats only for the rich americans and their money....

There is even a toll that only accepts US dollars.

Whats my nationality??? I am American first, Cuban second.

Good reading there...
that doesn't really debunk anything...if at all, it just relatively compares mortality rate in the US and Cuba. Vicki never said compared to the US, just mortality rate in general, something that the author himself agreed to be low.
