After much discussion with Wes I'm posting this up. I got some NGK Iridium plugs, pn. BKR5EIX-11. I was told these are the OE pn. in Iridium. The guy I got them from is someone I've known for a while and he's a Honda specialist. I was talking to him about my wife's Accord Wagon and he goes, "I can get you plugs for the Q for 6$". I though, cool. Then he says, the Iridium's are the same price if you prefer, and we basically don't use the platinums any more. So I figure, why not? Now, I'm worried and think I should send them back and just get the platinum. What do you guys think? BTW, these are the same temp range too.

Hi Kevin,The BKR5EIX-11's are Iridum IX, which has smaller electrode tip than than the OE's. I don't think they're gonna last that long compare to the OE's. I understand that the Y33 uses NGK OE laser platinum plugs PN. PFR5G-11. NGK does have an OE laser Iridium plug for the Y33, PN. IFR5E11. It looks like it has the same electrode tip size as the OE laser platinum. The IFR's are OE factory plugs in my friend's GS400. So I wouldn't hesitage to try them.

I know the original Q engine was designed for the NGK double platinum. It's more expensive than what you paid for the Iridium, but I would go for the double platinum.

The real way to check is to put it on an ocilloscope back to back.

With factory plugs lasting 60K+ miles and performing flawlessly, why experiment?

Exactly. For the price, if it was the NGK IFR's then I would try it because it wouldn't hurt. But the NGK BKR's should only last about 40K. Denso Iridium IR's are worst, last only 10-20K.

Thanks for the reply's guys. I was told these were the same as OE, just in iridium. I will send them back and get the OE plugs. Thanks again. Glad I didn't have a chance to put them in already!

The oem plug can last 100k [on first set] plus depending on driving style and gasoline, we see them all the time from owners who don't change on time.As the engine ages the plugs need changing more often [for sure 60-70k after the first set] then 50k on the 3rd set........as the oil fouling goes up.

BG44k can help extend..........I am still changing mine at ~~60k last at 260k.

Ohh, thank's Qtech. I know from my service history print out that everything was done on time, but from about 56k to 70k there's an unknow gap and I want to take every precaution. From 70k to 75k when I got it, the history picks back up. I got it from the original dealer that sold it, so I assume the owner lived around here and had it serviced there. I'm at 86k right now, so I'm not in a rush then, but I'll ship the iridium's I got back, and get the OE plugs.

My driving style is pretty agressive, but not racer, I give it WOT at least a few times a day and use premium gas only, mostly Chevron. I also put Redline fuel injector cleaner about every 6 weeks.

my 96q had the original plugs changed at 70,000 miles, and currently has 80,000 on the second set and runs like new,I will probobly replace them when they have 100,000 miles on them as preventative maintenance only.I think all OBD2 controlled cars can go 100,000-120,000 easily on platinum plugs if driven hard occasionally to prevent fouling.
