Hi fellow nico members.

It's a 98 Q non touring and it's leaking power steering fluid. I took it apart and could not correctly identify the part leaking, but it's not the container nor the 2 rubber hoses leaking.

Where else could it be leaking from?. There is limited room in there and I can not for the life of me correctly identify the missing part. If you guys can point me to where it might leak from maybe I can concentrate on that?

Thanks

Most common is the hose from the reservoir to the rack.

IMO, if it's not the hoses or the fluid reservior, then it is unfortunately the steering rack. Try cleaning everything off including underneath the engine with engine cleaner and a pressure washer and then fill up the reservoir to the fill line and jack up the front of the car to get both front wheels off the ground. Make sure you use proper jackstands and wheel chocks on the rears.

Next, start the car and have someone turn the wheels stop to stop while you watch for any leaks. Depending on the mileage on your car, your seals on the steering rack could be going. Is it a small leak or are you having to put fluid in every few days?

Try that and let us know. Don't try any leak repair additives (like Lucas) until you find out where the fluid is leaking from. Also, make sure you don't have any air in the system, The FSM tells you step by step how to remove any air bubbles.

Good luck.

Just don't use any additives except something like BG seal conditioner unless you want to flush the whole system. Stop leak additieves are the worst.

Well its so bad that I have to put in fluid every day or so. It makes a horrible sound and all that, but it goes away when it's properly filled.

You need to repair before driving. It could blow and leave you in a tough situation.

I have to agree with Max big time. I had this happen to me getting on the highway. Lucky I was only doing 30 mph. Had it been at the full 70, I probably wouldn't be typing right now. I felt the car jerking side to side, with no control, it scared me. I kept adding fluid every day but the high pressure hose was the cause and eventually went out.

Yes the Q is currently resting. I don't want to risk loosing my Q over messed up power steering. I am looking for some time to get my hands dirty!

on mine the suction hose from res to pump was leaking. a bit pricey at $33 from IoS, but has been nice and dry since.

Like I noted, the most common failure. On a lift, the source should be obvious once cleaned.
