I have been pondering some stuff while sitting at work and thought I would post to see some opinions

1)what gauges did everyone go with.

So far I have a boost gauge and a water temp gauge. I was going to get a AF gauge but wouldnt that be on the S-AFC or whatever you get??? So I am at a loss for which to get to complete my triple gauge pod thingamajigger.

2)if you DID go with a water temp sesnor, where did you install it. I bought one and it wont go in the stock sensor location. I was going to see if I can put it in the hole on the bottom of the radiator. There is a green plug on the RB radiator. It isnt in use (I hope it wasnt important, it is unplugged). I was going to unscrew that and put see if it could go in there. BUt i was browsing project Silvia.com and saw a greddy temp sensor adapter. Bsically you stick this in the upper radiator hose (well you would have two hoses of sorts with this adapter in the middle and the sensor would go there. Would the upper radiator hose provide an accurate reading of the current temperature??? I would like the sensor to be at the hottest point possible. To me (my limited knowledge) it would make sense to have the sensor at the hottest point to get a representative number of what the temp is. Sorry for the long post. I am thinking outloud so to speaks and figured what the hell.......

WELL I AM GETTING THE PRFOEC E01 AND EMANAGE SO THAT HAS BOOST, A/F, AND ANY OTHER SENSOR I WANT TO HOOK UP TO IT. BUT FOR THE THREE EXTERNAL I'M GOING WITH WT, OP, OT. I'M ALSO GETTING A 200MPH SPEEDO, 12K TACH, NEW FUEL LEVEL GAUGE, ISOLATED FUEL PRESSURE GAUGE AND I'M GOING TO MAKE A NEW GAUGE CLUSTER.

WHEN WE DO OUR HARD PIPES WE ARE GOING TO PUT TWO PORTS IN IT ONE FOR THE STOCK SENSOR AND THE OTHER FOR A SECONDARY SENSOR.

I would at least have Boost and A/F. Good others if you are moving away from stock: oil pressure, fuel pressure, oil temp, water temp.

Good stuff. Music you are going all out huh??? So what is the point of the oil temp. I know the gist of the oil pressure, but what does oil temp tell you??? Also what does egt tell you??? I am going t do some research tonight when I get home, but I'll just ask the question since I am bored at work...

Doh, forgot about EGT. I would put that right up there after Boost gauge importance.

I just ripped this from another site, explains it ok.

"With an EGT gauge, you can observe and be forewarned of potential leaning-out problems leading to catastrophic failure due to excessive engine temperatures. When you're engine is running lean (a high Air-Fuel ratio), the combustion temperatures climb dangerously high. If not corrected it will likely lead to "holing a piston." This is when the cylinder wall essentially melts (usually at a point, hence the term hole). "

OIL TEMP TELLS YOU BASICALLY THE VISCOSITY OF THE OIL. THE HIGHER THE TEMPERATURES THE THINNER THE OIL IS GETTING, SO IF YOUR REPEATEDLY SEEING HIGHER TEMPS YOU CAN CHANGE OIL TYPES TO BETTER SUIT. IT ALSO TELLS YOU OF THE INTERNAL BLOCK TEMPERATURE AS OIL PICKS UP HEAT RATHER QUICKLY.

THE REASON I'M GETTING ALL THAT IS BECAUSE I'M BUILDING A SHOP CAR. WE PLAN ON RUNNING THE ENGINE ON THE RAGGED EDGE.

Isnt that what a air/fuel gauge does???

YEAH, BUT THE AIR FUEL GAUGE IS NOT VERY GOOD AT DETECTING QUICK CHANGES. THE EGT PICKS UP ON EXHAUST TEMP AND THE LEANER THE MIXTURE THE HOTTER THE EXHAUST.

Timing also affects EGT. Even with the same A/F, your timing could change EGT.

TRUE BECAUSE TIMING IS ALSO THE AMOUNT OF BURN OF THE FUEL.

why don't you just go with a wideband O2 sensor, then you have real, useable info to tune your car with as well as making sure it is running ok.

WELL MOST PEOPLE CAN'T READ OR COMPREHEND A WIDEBAND O2 SENSOR. IT IS ALSO LIKE $300+

Because I am a basic guy. I dont think I need the wideband for 300rwhp. I just want the basic. I may not even get to 300rwhp. Maybe 250rwhp. That is basic bolt ons (injectors, fuel pump, FMIC and a turbo, exhaust and raise the boost a little). That is why I wanted to sell my 240 actually. After spending the money, it isnt that fun. Not for the travelling I did for the car and then the swap...etc

It's worth the money to me in more ways than one. It keeps me from getting bored. There is always something to tinker with on the car. There are always more things to learn about. Lets me set goals and accomplish them. Gives me something to brag about to my friends. :D I can always sell it later on for about the price I paid for it, because labor costs money and I do all the work myself. I love cars!

One last thing, I am wanting to get into the business so I need to sponge up all the info I can. I will be talking to my importer about bringing over RB engines / rebuild parts and another friend about helping with the wrench turning. :)
