First, anyone change a climate control console bulb? Mine's been out forever and I'm finally sick of it and ready to replace it. Could you briefly describe the process? Thanks.

Second, anyone change out their shims? Could you briefly describe the process? Thanks.

Third, any negatives to running without a thermostat for the rest of summer? The second one I put in is now dead and I don't feel like messing with it right now.

Problem #1: Take off the plastic panel around your shifter, then unscrew and take out your stock radio (i think) and your climate control. Tinker with the climate control until you find your broken bulb.

Problem #2: What shims?

Problem #3: The ka24 is a tough old battleaxe of a motor but IT NEEDS A THERMOSTAT.

Let me know if you have any q's

Whoops, I meant the shims that the cam lobes push on.

Well, I'm running without a thermo right now, took it out last night after work. Only side effect I've seen is the obvious, really slow to heat up. Not so bad though, still heats up faster then it does in winter. I'll get one in there before it gets cold outside.

Thanks for you reply, but I was looking for something a little more detailed, someone who has changed a bulb in there already so I know what to expect. I'm sure I could have figured that out.

It won't and isn't hurting anything.

For the climate control. Take it out. Take off back cover thingy. Pop out first circuit board. Look for three plastic screws. Those are the bulbs. You can only get them at nissan, never seen them anywhere else. Cost me $17 bucks for all three.

Note: This was on S14. S13 shouldn't be much different.

Well, you'll need a feeler gauge to check if they're indeed out of spec. You may also need a micrometer (and of course some shims).

If you don't own an FSM, here's some helpful stuff from JWT...

Edit: What makes you think you need new shims? New cams? Lots of valve train noise?

about the thermo, i would replace it. My 240 ran really bad on a broke one. i think you should replace it before you blow up your car. or if there is not any damage on you thermo, it might be your head gasket

drftsil8ty,

Lol, I think I'll take my chances. I don't think it'll blow up my motor. Running with a bad one and running without one are two very different things.

Its supposed to be part of the factory 60K mile tuneup service to get the shims checked/replaced. I know i have alot of valvetrain noise and ive never found a good enough tutorial on how to do it correctly. I just got confused with that description in the FSM. It came out like engrish.

Well, I bought a feeler gauge yesterday. I'll check my clearance and if I have to change any out, I'll let you know how to do it. Probly won't get to it till next thursday (my day off) cuz I have to put my damn steering rack in tomorrow (my other day off).

Thanks dude, exactly what I was looking for. But, the wierd thing is sometimes, very rarely, the lights will work. Is the problem deeper then just a bad bulb or two?

If it's after hitting a bump, or if they ever flicker, then its more than likely a loose wire.
