Ok so me and my dad just finished putting in the new motor in my 91 na not long ago and i have a few problems. My z ever since i bought it months ago has something going on with the trans. It shifts hard into first or second, it kicks hard and then it seems like it doesnt want to shift into the other gears, well it hesitates and sometimes if i gas it hard it just revs up. And also i can go outside and start it up and it starts fine but if i shut it off and then try to start it again it idles to about 1000 and then shuts off. Any help would be greatly appreciated please i have been without my z since freaking September after only driving it for two weeks!! I have done a lot of research but just always find different stuff so if anyone can help out i would be very happy!

Auto transmission? If so, you may need to have it rebuilt. I don't know much about autos, but that sounds like a failure from within the transmission. Anyone care to add insight?

When was the last time the automatic has been flushed or even a filter change? Its very possible one of the solenoids are gummed up with some type of varnish. It could be as simple as the filter is clogged and its not getting the proper circulation.

Im gonna have to almost say what paratrooper is saying, may have to be rebuilt. If you can take it to a trans shop and have them diagnose it, at least get three diff quotes, they like to stick it to you because they are so complex to diagnose exactly what is wrong. So it could be something simple, but they will tell you its something detrimental.

TPS or MAF?

Some good info here and in the FSM.

Believe there's also an self-diagnostic mode/routine for the automatic transmission that you can run.

Good luck and report back!

TPS will make it act weird, which wouldn't be a bad idea on checking that out.

MAF will just make the car run like utter crap, still not a bad idea on checking out the connections and make sure they are not corroded.

The self diagnostics for the auto are a joke, I have tried them and everything has line up perfectly and be done EXACTLY the way it is described in the manual.

And speaking of diagnostics, have you ran any error codes through the ECU? Its possible you may have two completely diff problems all together. Or it could be alomg the facts the torque converter is toast and locking up causing it to shut the car off. There are so many variables that can cause the car to have issues the way it is. Check for ECU codes before anything else.

Id flush the transmission and put some redline ATF in it and see if that clears it up....if not....your probably in for a rebuild. How many miles are on it?

This thread gives some insight on the general consensus on JDM engines, hopefully you got one of the good ones.

If you are going to own this car I suggest you get to reading, you not your dad, find the FSM either here on NICO or elsewhere on the net and go through the testing procedures recommended for your problem, then start branching out and learning about other systems in these cars. Z32s are fairly complicated by comparison to your average taurus/camry/caravan and very expensive to fix when done by a shop so i suggest you learn as much as you can about it and do your own work to your abilities of course, well that or get the checkbook ready.
