well i blew the engine in my 240 2 years ago, and i was sick of looking at it broke in the yard. i originally had big plans for it but was in a motorcycle accident that left my right arm paralized and i couldnt afford quality parts, so i got what i could to get it up and running.

SR20DET

Gasket Kit

Oil Filter & Plugs

Godspeed Parts

Rad

Intercooler

Downpipe

Intake Manifold {ordered the polished one but got this...}

Turbo Lower Manifold

Oil Catch Can

KVR J-Hook Rotors & Pads

BC Racing BR Type Coilovers

XXR 962 Wheels - 18x8.5 & 18x9.5

have a few other small parts ordered, pulleys/belts/tires etcstill deciding on a BOV, was thinking HKS, but it seems like everyone and their dog has one, i'd like to get something differentgot my eye on a set of sparco seatsdebating on ordering some suspension parts from ebay, the guy i got the engine parts from is really good to deal with, he has a suspension kit for $350 shipped, it includes - s13 front sway bar, s13 rear sway bar, s13 tension rod, s13 toe arm , s13 camber - is that a good deal? or should i be looking into something else first?

picked up a 60g compressor / sand blaster and a spray gun for the parts that wont be getting replaced.

hopefully i'll start the car soon, any suggestions on what parts i should be looking into next?

most of the engine parts are godspeed, at least there supposed to be, i never even took them out of the bubble wrap, just snapped a few pics.

lol i picked them rotors and pads up for dirt cheap, like 200 for the set i think. i seen them online for 600

yea i've seen them in a mag before, also heard they were good brand heres a

little thing thats talks about the rotor

1. Greater Initial Bite: Allows for a faster reaction at high or low speeds, when compared to std slotting 2. Superior Pad Cleaning: Brake pads are much less susceptible to glazing with Hook slotting 3. Faster Pad Release: The innovative J-Hook machining allows the pad to release more effectively than standard slotting, minimizing brake drag 4. Reduced Thickness Variation: J Hook discs are less susceptible to brake pad build up, which normally causes runout

i was tempted to upgrade the turbo, i'd like to have one before the motor goes in but theres alot of things the car NEEDS before that. see what happens tho. i'll let yah know

Back for an update, i have been busy for a while with school/work/doctor/physio etc.. and never had anytime to start the car, i started picking at it here and there for around the last 2 months. Just really started last week after classes were over, im doing this build 99% on my own, just to basically prove to myself i can, so its gonna be slow :cartman: My external hard drive crashed and i lost all my pics and info, i salvaged what i could, but alot are missing. im posting alot of these pics just in case i lose them again lol
Little update on the arm if anyone cares, i flew to Calgary from Nova Scotia last year for surgery, it was a 12 hour operation, the surgeon borrowed nerves from my hand and peck nerves and reattached them to my spine, a few months ago i started moving my hand/wrist a bit, then started bending my elbow, no movement in the shoulder but its a huge bonus. Makes everything way easier

Anyway my budget has come to an end, for now, i think i have the basics covered for the swap

Suspension Set
Image

Megan Racing Strut Brace (ordered the Gunmetal and got the Polished  )
Image

"Polished" Intake Manifold & Manual Boost Controller - i ordered the polished intake from godspeed and they sent me the non polished, but they gave me the polished for next to nothing, needs a good buffing, at least if one cracks i'll have the other :ohno:

Image

Megan Racing Turbo Outlet & Short Shifter

Image
Image

Greddy Hotpipe & Type RS BOV ( had to order flange, i asked buddy if the flange was pre welded, of course he said yes :tisk: )

Image

Image

Water Pump

Image

Clutch - its a 6 paddle competition clutch for a 89-94 maxima, i got it from Tennessee Clutch & Supply, i've heard good things (maxima-clutch-for-sr20det-t350878.html)

Image
Image

2 Sets of Pulleys - i ordered the blue and i got a note taped to the silver saying "ran out of blue" lol everyone loves to screw me over apparently, im in Canada so 90% of the time its cheaper to buy a new part then pay for shipping there and back, + duty fees.
Image
Brake Lines
Image

Turbo Lines
Image

Clutch Line
Image

Walbro 255 Fuel Pump
Image
Image

Picked up a new Thermostat
Image

New Torque Wrench & Pulleys  I Love new tools
Image
Image

Wire Harness, Thanks Goes Out To Wiring Specialties !! Harness looks great and they had it done and shipped back to my door in like a week :dblthumb:

Image

Got a s*** load of sleeving for the wires
Image
Image
Even got a new t-shirt!!!
Image

Thats it for the pics, i have some more parts, lost most of the pics in the hdd,
Now that school is over I will be able to put more time into the car, and get something done
On order i have the Energy Suspension bushing set & and Circut Sport Grounding Plate from enjuku and the heater hose set from frsport
I need to find a set of fans, preferably from an Altima, is there a certain year I should be looking for? I would like better calibers too, is there any front caliper upgrades that will work with stock size Rotors? I have those KVR J-Hook Rotors, and I don't want them to go to waste, I don't have the money to go nuts tho
anyways that's it for now, I'll finish posting tomorrow what I got done to the car last week

So onto the car, a little background --
it was absolutely MINT when i got my hands on it,not a spec of rust, and it was the funniest thing i ever drove, and i was young and dumb, so it got a pretty good beating. I blew the motor, gotta be 3 years ago now i guess, i was doin 360's in a parking lot when she died, stupid i know. I took the car home and lifted the valve cover, the plate that goes over the top of timing chain, snapped clean off, i removed the plugs, and the plug that was in the 3rd cylinder had the tip snapped off and down the head :bang (Pics below)
After that it was time to go away to work (Alberta) i had no where to store the car at the time, so i tucked her away in the corner of the yard and laid a tarp under it to prevent the grass from growing up and rotting. I came home after 2 1/2 years and the car was parked in the middle of the Yard with grass growing out from under it, apparently my neighbour was building a garage and needed the car moved, my father moved it :argh man i was pissed, everything rusted and ceased, needs a bit of body work, 2 small holes on the passenger side strut tower, 1 HUGE hole on the drivers side strut tower, and there is a 4x4" square of rot near the rear wheel. Nothing to serious

Here's the car about a year after i got it
Image

The timing chain bracket that snapped
Image
Image

Spark plug tip snapped off
Image

This is basically the first car I done any actual work on, so feel free to chime in, there is still a ton I need to learn

First thing I did was pull the KA, I'm not going into detail, because everything you need to know is right here s13-ka24de-engine-removal-t299950.html , I was surprised how easy things went following this guide, it's basically remove the wire harness, remove a/c & heater lines from firewall, motor mounts and hook up the chains

Image

Hooked it up to this POS cherry picker, believe it or not, it's only a year old, my father lent it to someone and it came back looking like this, with no wheels and the frame bent :bash: i started lifting the motor out and one of the legs shot right up into the air, I had to holler to my little cousin to come and stand on it :chuckle:
Image
Image
Other than that everything went smooth
And out :dance
Image
Image

Someone in my area was looking for a stock spoiler (no idea why) so i took mine off, expecting to see giant rot rusted holes, i was surprised at the condition after 3 years of sitting
Image
This is what it looked like when I took it off
Image
After a quick wipe down, not to bad at all :dblthumb:
Image

I stripped him the engine bay to get it ready for paint, I really didn't want to sand it all down, instead I spent the day building a sand blaster
I had an 8 gallon compressor with no motor that was ready to be chucked away, I went to the hardware store and picked up some fittings and a length of 3/8" pipe, (I ordered a pipe threading kit, and threaded some of my own fittings) here's what I started with-
Image

After welding in a couple of fittings, I put wheels and a handle on it
Image

I started to sand the blaster down to paint but that s*** is hard to get off, the sandblaster was even having a hard time
Image

A very very simple design, anyone with a welder could do this, I used a stick welder, but any welder would do

No one in my area carries sandblaster accessories, I ordered a few nozzles from Princess auto and made my own
Image
Image

The tip on the left is 1/8", the one on the right is 3/32", the 3/32 gets plugged fairly often
Image

I stripped the engine bay, then sandblasted it was, waiting for buddy to come down and do the bodywork so i could paint, f*** guys says he is coming down everyday and never shows up, I'm tempted to do it myself, but I never done bodywork and don't want to make a mess.
Stripped Bay

Blasted Bay

Big a** hole
Image

I have the sr stripped and ready for paint, might do that today, might wait till its not s*** and rainy tho

You are a freaking beast man and your build is sick. Good luck with everything. How did you take the pictures of the timing chain bracket while holding the plate. Just curious.

I almost positive that timing chain guide broke off before your 360 ordeal. I've never heard of those j hook brakes either. They do look pretty crazy though.

I hate to hear motorcycle addicent stories like yours since I'm getting over to the motorcycle world right now.

Thanks man, glad you asked, i actually use my arm quite a bit now, if you read the start of the last post i explained i went to Calgary, AB for surgery and regained some movement in my arm, basically i can bend my elbow towards my chest, but can't extend it out, i can snap my wrist down, but can't extend it up, can make a fist, but cant open very well . When i need my arm to do something, i can position my bad arm with my good arm and use my hand to grab/hold etc. Its hard to explain, but i can do a s*** load of stuff i don't even know how i do.

Anyway, as for the pic, i just put the camera in my gimpy hand, with my thumb on the snap button, put my foot on the front bumper with my leg bent, picked up my arm and rested it by my knee, hit my thumb with my chin, voylaa (after about 10 attempts, i got a decent pic lol) , i just recently started getting some control over a few fingers, thumb, index & middle, the last 2 aren't worth a fuk tho, but things are getting eaiser by the day

just be smart about it and you'll be fine man, don't show off for friends or yourself and RESPECT the machine, that was my biggest issue, thought i was invincible, if you wanna go fast take it to a track. another huge issue is cars/trucks, no one on the roads give a s*** about bikes, they are always cutting us off, half the time they don't even look.

speaking of the timing chain bracket, i was moving the ka out of the garage and it was on the stand, i decided to drop the oil pan, i was blown away by what i found

Image

this is what came out of the pan

Ok, so i took the sr out of the plastic and got to work
Image
i pretty much stripped it right down to the block
Image
I was surprised how easy everything came off, both sides came off pretty much as one piece.
Image

then scrubbed with degreaser, then wire wheeled the s*** out of it. Taped some stuff of, soaked with acetone and sprayed it. Started with 2 coats of primer, then 2 coats of duplicolor aluminum engine enamel, followed by a few clear.
Image
Image

And this is the finished product, turned out pretty good
Image

Then i started sanding and painting all the little odds and ends, brackets etc. I ordered a polished intake and turbo manifold, when i got them they were dull as could be, i tried to polish them up a bit
Believe it or not thats 100 times better then it was, couldn't get any better without re sanding
Image
Turbo manifold came a little better
Image

I installed a new thermostat, i got one for a 91 sentra, looks a little flimsy compared to the stock one, but it fits. I had a gasket with the kit i got for the build, but i Applied some liquid gasket anyways.
After removing the bolts just give it a tap with a rubber mallet and it will break loose, use a razor blade or gasket scraper to remove the old gasket.
Image
To remove the thermostat from the waterneck i had to give it a tap with the rubber mallet
Image
The one on the left is the new one from a 91 sentra.
Image
Place the thermostat in the housing with the plunger up top, apply liquid gasket and tighten.
Image

Same thing applys for the waterpump, break the seal with rubber mallet, remove old gasket, reinstall with liquid gasket, torque to 12-16 ft-lbs. I have a full list of torque specs i used so far on the garage computer if anyone needs them.
Thermostat and waterpump installed
Image

Got board so i sprayed the blaster
Image
I blasted the crank pulley and sanded it, was going to paint it blue but decided to leave it as is
Image
What would be the best way to keep it from rusting? I polished it with a fine compound, not sure if that will do or not. if i sprayed a clear coat over, would it do the trick?

My suspension bushings and heater hoses came in last week, still waiting for my grounding plate, and going to order a powder coated valve cover, candy blue :)
Image
Image
Picked up a nice little acetylene set, gonna need it to burn the old bushings out.
Image

there are no powder coating shops in my area so im gonna get one from these guys http://www.trgcoating.com/color_chart.php
Its $45 for the powdercoating, $20 for a candy color. He has the covers in stock, so he coats one, color of choice, ships it out, when i recieve it, i take mine off and ship it back. Does that sound like a good price?
Here the color
Image

I cleaned up the turbo a bit
Image
I didnt wanna paint the turbo because it will prob burn the paint off on first start up, oh well, did it anyway.
Image
Image(notice the hicas p/s pump to the right? is there some kind of pin that holds it or something? i soaked in pb blaster 5 times a day for a week, tried to take it off, ended up snapping the threaded rod in the middle of the puller. i welded a deep socket on the threads and tried again, heated it up with acetylene, started reefin on it with the breaker bar, and snapped the arm off the pulley puller :iconeek )

I installed a megan turbo elbow, for some reason they only gave 2 studs to fit the turbo, the rest were too big
Image
i went ahead and used the stock bolts for the rest, and for no apparent reason, the threads on the turbo were stripped, i broke out the tap and die set and fixed them up.
Image

I started the stainless turbo lines,i went by this diagram
Image
Turbo lines
Image

I put teflon tape on the fittins, not sure if it is necessary, when using teflon be sure to wrap it the opposite way of threads, otherwise it will just peel of when threading in.
Image

I was having trouble holding the turbo while trying to break the banjo bolts, so i just cracked them off with the impact.
Image

Used a 12mm line wrench to break the water return line
Image

Old vs New
Image

Installed
Image

Alot of spots on the turbo and manifold there was no room to fit a socket, is there anyway to get a close torque reading from a wrench? Or is it just best guess? :gotme

There was a bracket that came with the manifold, it on the right, i tightened that up
Image
Image

Then installed it on the turbo. There is no room to fit a socket here, i don't feel to safe crankin it with a wrench and calling it good, even with those locking tabs. Oh when i started tearing apart the turbo, everything was hand tight. Seriously, I never used a tool on a single nut or bolt when taking it apart. Other then the bracket on the wastegate actuator.
Image
Image

I bolted the turbo side up lastnight
Image
Image
Image

Thats it for now, i'll start the intake side next. I gotta take a break from the car for a week or 2, all the boys are home from away, and their pissed because i spend more time with the car then getting drunk 7 days a week with them (to old for that s*** ) lol
