Hey everyone...the idle on my car is a little rough when warmed up. it idles around 750 but then hesitates and drops to about 500 and almost dies. I think it might be the air filter i have on as one of the hoses originally attached to the stock airbox is now not connected to anything.

any ideas? should i put one of those dinky air filters on?

also...does anyone have any good pictures of the TPS? i might try bumping up my idle...car's not supposed to be on when i'm adjusting the idle screw right?

thanks in advance!

alright i have an update on my idle problem. my idle is perfectly fine until i come to a stop. while i'm braking/car's in neutral coming to the stop the engine's rpms will fall to about 500-550 but then after about a second or two correts itself. i believe this is called 'hunting'?

anyone know the culprit to this? i think this is a very common 240 problem so we might help out a few more people if we get this answered. i've been searching to find out other people's idle problems and i found a thread that describes my situation perfectly...cept it's on an infiniti.

The hose that is by itself is connected to the AIV which you can pull that entire system off. Right now you have a vacumn leak, not sure how much vacumn is coming from that hose but it should be capped or pulled.

I used to have about the same dropping idle when coming to a stop on my 93 240....if i were u i would clean my MAF with carb cleaner and find your engine temp sensor right near your air relief valve. Its a red clip that has a few other sensors around it. I fixed my idle problems by cleaning all of those sensors with carb cleaner. It wont hurt to try. Good luck!

so is it the aiv that's causing the idle oscillations? or is it the problems with the maf/related systems?

isn't this the hose that (if it's malfunctioning) sends hot air back into the intake? so shouldn't this not affect my idle since it's not attached to anything? or am i not really understanding the problem?

i had the same frustrating problem with my 96 240.i took the trottle body off and cleaned it with carb cleaner and she purred like a moutain lion.i replaced the idle sensor(no fix) and a few other sensors and never worked and one day i got the bright idea to do a spring cleaning on the TB and before cleaning it, it wasnt opening up properly due to crud build up over 136K miles but after i cleaned really good and put it back on to this day it has never idled unstable.that could be your problem. If u decide to clean the Tb get back 2 me and let me know if that was ur problem.

that hose supplies air to the aiv unit. the aiv unit is next to useless so if blocking that hose helps , block it. that hose is normally hooked up to the air intake where the air filter is.

next, make sure you clean your iacv.
