1990 Q45 do I have to remove the back seat and deck lid to get it out or just go through the trunk to remove the fuel pump?

Im pretty new to this site and the q45 in general, so i may get flamed for this... but i found it easier to remove and install the fuel pump from the trunk position (which is the opposite of what many suggest as well as the write-up on q45.org)

The problem for me when trying to remove it through the rear sundeck binnacle was that the pump was slightly off from the binnacle opening. Picture this, if you look straight down from the binnacle (chest facing the rear of the car) , the fuel pump is about six inches to the right, so it's not a simple "just pull it out and drop it in" kind of procedure, what with the fuel lines being in the way as well.

Additionally, i needed two hands to remove the fuel pump (to twist it every which way to get it out) therefore, it was very difficult for me to work through the binnacle because the opening only allowed me to use one hand. Maybe im just a wimp?

For me, i found it easier (from the trunk) to pull the fuel pump up slightly, move the fuel lines out of the way, angle the pump towards the back of the car, pull it out a little more, then twist it about 90* clockwise, then pull the rest of the pump out.

Hope this helps.

James

If your fuel gauge doesn't work right, you'll know why the trunk method isn't recommended.

I removed the back seat and rear shelf. It only takes about 30 extra minutes. I did take the fuel pump through the trunk, but used the hole in the decklid to keep the fuel gage from getting bound up.
