the gated shifter is part of the charm of motoring in many European sports cars, most of them have dropped the gate in favor of a tighter shift patern, I believe you'll find the Z patern too tight for a gate, it would be simple to machine a gate if the pattern were large enough

yeah the gate looks so simple to mill up, and fab on.. cept would it be worth it with an already short shifter?

That wont work on a Z, you will miss nearly every gear.

Helical cut gears wont like that plate very much. And as stated above hitting third gear will certainly be a chore

Indeed, but there's also consideration into fabing one that fits the pattern perfectly.

I also have to agree that the gate won't fit. It would be pointless. Some of my friends just go diagonally into third and fifth. i think it would definitely be a pain. the shifts are supposed to be short and smooth, not like lambos and ferrari's. i say stop thinking about it.

Don't cut the fingers too long. Just cut mainly the end of the gates. It'll work for sure.

I have access to machines at work, i'll get a hold of some scrap metal or even make a trial out of plexi just to see if its possible in anyway. Give me a bit and i'll let you know. (i have a short shifter though)

Any chance you can make one for me too? My VQswap S13 will need one once I'm done. I'm not a fan of close shifters.

sorry fella's its not that the shift pattern is so close, its that the gated setup would require you to raise the shift gate whic would look like crap, or custom make a shifter because of a bulky part in the way..... i'm sure it could be done but not for cheap at all. These pics show a better perspective of what i saw today while trying to fab up a prototype.

shifter

bulky part that is the reason it cannot be done

you can see how far it sets up (fail)

a 240sx shifter rod would clear that easy.

The NISMO butt-plug pic shows what's blocking the way.

That's not really mine. I prefer Spec V shifter from the SE-R. It feels a lot better to hold. I don't feel the aluminum NISMO or the butt-plug.

i used a channel lock wrench/pliers. it effed up the leather but i don't plan on using it anyway. I bought a pro-1 short shifter and it came with an aluminum shift knob (sphere) that threads on. The shift knobs with set screws suck, i bought one and it looked sweet but came loose every other shift.... fail nonetheless.....

Boom raised from the ashes because...I saw one yesterday AGAIN downtown.

It was a red 350z on some sort of work rims (im guessing emotion), I took a peep inside and saw he had a gated shifter!! it sux I didnt have my camera on me but it looked like he worked around there since he had a parking permit. I'll have to check that out again sometime. He also had the Nissan hamburger on his steering wheel instead of the Z emblem. Its always the small things which stand out..

Always use a heavy towel first, then your wrench....absolutely no scuff marks on the shifter.
