I all ready know I am the old man of the group, but today after dropping my auto trans I actually feel old! My arms, legs, and back are all acheing right now from breaking tight bolts loose in all sorts of ackward positions. I never used to feel these, and I was dealing with much larger parts/bolts from the muscle car erra! I got 3 major battle scars on my left hand from forcing it into places it should not have been to get to bolts.

I hope I can move tomorrow so I can get started installing my 5 speed! I also never used to whine about aches and pains either!!! LOL

Advice to all...................don't get old!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm probably as old as you and will be there next weekend so you can do my 5-speed swap. I figure you'll be an expert by then

I'd be glad to HELP you, but have no interest in doing it myself! I am being held up a little by using this as a teaching tool for my 16 year old son.

Congrats! Hardest part is over. You finished 2/3 of the swap today. It'll be much easier from there. Keep up the good work.

Hey! Your son is my age. Don't worry, whenever my dad helps/works on anything with vehicles, he always complains the next morning. So you're not alone! He's old too.

That happens to me and I haven't hit 30 yet. It happens. Nothing beats alieve or 800 mg of ibuprofen. I got sore after crawling around upside down on the floor under a dash removing a steering column. Just gotta stretch a bit before doing things.

Grandpa 5 times over??!?! Okay you're right, you are old. But you have a cool car. I was at Jersey Mike's the other day and pulled up in the vert with my wife. The guy taking my order wanted to know everything about it. My son, who drove his Tacoma was like, "dad, you have a really cool car!"

Hey BiXLL,You among friends.. and old ones at that. We understand. Just a thought about the install part. I loosened the motor mount bolts almost all the way and put my engine hoist and strap under the front part of the motor. I lifted the front a bit to get a easier angle to slide the transmission into the clutch assembly. It also makes for a bunch more room to get those top two bolts. One other thing if you haven't figured it out. Swivels and extensions are your friend..lol. Hopefully you're not using that bleeder block and are benting your line to meet with clutch slave cylinder. It make bleeding the clutch a whole lot easier. I'm lucky to have lots of meds to help me recover from my heavy car work days. LOL. Good Luck,

Thanks Topless, good advice! I don't have an engine hoist, but I can still loosen the motor mounts and put a jack under the front of the motor. I decided today that I did not want to use the flywheel as it was as when I was cleaning it up I found multiple areas on the face where it was pitted. I know with my muscle cars any defect on the flywheel would lead to clutch chatter and I hate that. Sooooo, rather then be sorry, I am sending the wife with it to the machine shop to have it turned.

I did get my clutch pedal/master cylinder installed as well as running the hydro line and cutting my brake pedal to where I was able to use a standard brake pedal pad on it. I also have all my wiring done and in place, and ecu replaced. Spent the rest of the day cleaning up the garage, taking old parts to back of shed, etc.

Next weekend I should be able to complete everything with no problem

Holy crap this thread is funny. I dropped my auto last week when the torque converter crapped out. Not only did I have to drop my trannsmission at home, but I had to drop one at the junkyard too so that I could get the converter out. Alone, laying on oily gravel, hurrying to get done so that I could get home and get going on mine so that the car would be driveable Monday. Dropping two transmissions in 1 day, alone, at age 41, is not as easy as it used to be. Every muscle I have ached for 3 days. Not only that, but Nismo motor mounts make getting that very top bolt on the bellhousing next to impossible to remove, from any angle, with any number of extensions. The one at the junkyard was easier, I just unbolted the crossmember and let the engine crash to the ground.

Me and friends working my coupe this weekend. Swapped out: rear subframe, crossmember, engine, and started installing turbo.

I feel 95 y/o right now. So tired that when I went to get into bed a few minutes ago that I realized I had washed my sheets, but didn't put them in the dryer. Now waiting on that, as it gets close to midnight.

I'm in the same boat. I do love this thread...makes me laugh every time I read it. Makes me think of every day after I've worked in the shop on my car...with me, myself and I...hehe. I'll be doing my VLSD swap soon...with those three guys. I feel 18 when I'm driving my car but after working on it I feel all my 38 years.

My other hobby besides 240 is excerise like weight lifting, running...etc. I'm seriously into it, and I bench press almost everyday, but I wonder why I feel more tired and have sore body after I work on the car. There's somethig different about it. I wonder how it's like working as a mechanic. I'm sure it's not an easy job.

This thread rules!

Bill.. I'm impressed.. you're making quick work of this project. For as much as you sounded worried about it before you started.. you sound like it's a piece of cake now.

The wiring stuff is the hard part for me. For some reason the mechanical bits makes sense to me, but I struggle with wiring. If you have that done already, you're in really good shape.

I'm just jealous that you guys have had enough warm weather recently to actually work outside. We've just had two nice days (temps in the 50's).. first nice days of the year so far! So now I have a major itch to work on car stuff!!!

Maybe I'll start taking my V8 motor apart tonight.

Lets hear it for us old guys... Everyone raise our beers and our canes.. I'd like to think after all these years that I work smarter and try to plan my projects better to save my back as best as I can. Bill..keep the old fart power going.

roflmao!!!!! OLD FARTS RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!! You guys are killing me! I know what you mean by working smarter, including working on the car. I preplan things more then I ever did and it saves a lot of time and effort. Some of that is out of need though, why get up and down a half dozen times when with a little planning you can get up and down once! I can hear the young guys reading this now...... "listen to these old guys, they are pathetic"!!!

Seth, it ain't that the weather has been all that great, all my work has been done in the garage with a 80,000 BTU propane torpedo heater. In all honesty, I was very nervous about taking this on, but it has gone much better then I expected. I credit you guys for that as I was really pretty educated on how to do this from the advice and guidance I got here. I am hoping to be able to tell you guys I am done this weekend. I work 10 to 12 hours a day during the week, so weekends is the only time I have to work on it.

You guys crack me up! I Have a SR20 in my garage that I needed to get the flywheel off to put it on the engine stand. Try as I might, I couldn't get those bolts broken, so I called in my "little" brother (6'1", 270-ish lbs) and he did it in a matter of minutes...

I'm only 35 and I feel sooooooo old =(

OK guys, "GRAMPS" was out there wrenching again today. Got the transmission in, driveshaft hooked up pretty much everything done today. Then when I went to bleed the clutch, I found I had a bad compression fitting. I was filthy so I was not getting in my other vehicles to get a new one, besides it was getting close to dinner time. Tomorrow I will bleed the clutch, add transmission oil (5.5 pints?) and should be able to take it for a test drive! I all ready started it up real quick just to see if it would. Idle seemed a little high, but I did not let it run long. I also still don't have my lower boot, dust boot or shift boot yet I may put the lower boot that is torn at the top on so I can drive it, and I may have a lead on a dust boot I can get tomorrow. I have the lower boot ordered, but it won't be here until Wed.. I bought a shift boot and knob off ebay, but the guy is either a deadbeat or really slow, I all ready filed a dispute with pay pal, and he finally contacted me saying it was shipped Monday, but it still aint here?

I gotta say, I used the blind hole puller someone recommmended in the swap thread to get my pilot bushing out. It was the absolute easiest bushing removal I have ever done. Tightened up the tool and with 2 smacks of the slide hammer it was out! A real pleasure to use!

Make sure to remove the dampner box. Bend the hardline and connect. It'll be much easier that way.

I just started in that field last month. It's really amazing how something that would take all day or a weekend at home takes about 15 min to 3 hours at work.

Nissan screwed up my order and sent me a throwout bearing instead of a pilot bearing, so I have that little setback with mine.

I'm excited for you to get this done, and I'm not thinking old farts, I'm getting scared of realizing I'll be getting wore out faster one day.
