Hi All:

Pretty good chance I'm leaving for an Altima Hybrid. It makes too much financial sense for me to keep the Q.

Interesting, (see cars.gov) that the car only needs to be in, "drivable condition" when I trade it in. Keep in mind the feds have not made the final implementation plans so they could always mess with "driveable condition."

The law mandates the car be shredded. Yeah, after 17 years its going to hurt! It's really in pretty fair shape but not good enough to keep for $4,500.

So this begs the question, what stuff should I take out before I give it to the dealer? My initial list would be:

Radio / speakers - about 2 years old.* Nothing fancy.A/C about 18 months old (R12)*. It's had a small leak problem. Is that practical?Back seat bench - hardly ever used.*The "belt buckle" - for a souvenir! Floor mats - I have new original euquipment.*

*thought I could sell or donate these locally (Los Angeles)

I've appreciated the help I've got from this forum. Wouldn't mind helping a Q brother that needs a nonessential part.

Anyone have any other ideas let me know.

Note: I made a post on this subject about 10 days ago and it looks like it was was removed. Anyone know why?

Look forward to any ideas.

Regards,

Doug

Honestly, I'd say to gut the entire interior if you're going down that road.

Rear seats, trim, sunroof controls, switches, trunk lid, hood, stereo, antenna, spare tire, jack, side glass, grille, glovebox, ashtrays... If you're really going to go through with the shredding instead of just a normal trade-in or parting it out over time, get every single decent part you can out of it. All you need for it to be driveable are a few working cylinders, lights, and doors.

Just be careful, if you're not, they'll give you that $4500 for your poor Q, and then screw you on any other incentives they might have.

From a Q to a Altima? And a hybrid to boot? Please say you are kidding! Financial sense? Hybrids are a joke! Better insure your battery.Don't play their game. Keep your gas guzzler! Unless of course you are a dem.

Snarky politics, how quaint.

On a serious note, it can make sense if he's facing major work on the Q in the near future and was considering a new car anyhow. If he needs 2-3K worth of work that can't be financed outside of usurious credit card rates, or if the car's actually in fairly poor shape, it can be worthwhile. It'll suck to lose another Q that parts can be salvaged from, but it's his call.

My mom bought a new Accord when she sent me her Q, and she's loving it.

As to the hybrid battery issue, it's pretty well been proven a non-issue. Even the early Prius models have been holding up well for longer than most other cars, period. /armed, liberal, gas-guzzling dem.

I am doing the same. I already have an altima Hybrid but will be going for a 2010 prius. You will love the altima hybrid. It is no V8 but pretty peppy at times. A great bargain also. Time to let the old girl go. But really shame that I just put a new MAS and Injectors less than 10000 miles ago about 2 years ago.

Both for your Q and my tax dollars that are funding this bovine excrement.

Here's my take on the part-out... I would take the FPCU (just ground the pump) - I think the transmisison will limp without the TCU? Glove box if the hinges are good, any good trim panels, swap with a half dead MAF from Paul... he has a handfull of them. Grab the relays that control non-essential parts. Switches, power window regulators... the list goes on and on.

Gut the hell out of it. If you're going to play their damn game, play it well...

I would really make sure you have the go ahead to gut it or you will end up with a gutted car you can't trade in for credit. If you are cleared to pull parts I agree with Heath and the others, go crazy. Trans will run in reverse (I believe) and 3rd gear without the TCU.

"Returning" is a more accurate description than "Paying". The Fed took your money in the first place, and is now giving some of it back to you.

Just out of curiosity, is there any provision in this bill that would prevent you from selling your brand-new economy car for cash and using the proceeds to buy a nice late-model Q?

Interesting point.

Nothing says you need to keep the new car for any length of time. You can read the actual bill at cars.gov. It's not that complex.

Agreed! There is a sucker born every minute. US!I guess go ahead if it makes you feel more "green"!I would check the mpg though, and not what they say. Ask a current owner. Heath, get used to your kids tax dollars getting flushed. cap bill, failed stimulus bill, failed house bailout, etc, etc, etcAustralia looks pretty good!

Funny, that's the country I was thinking about too... I'm not ready to give up on America yet, but the fact that I'm even contingency planning is scary.

I've been looking at New Zealand myself. Me and my parents lived in Australia from when I was 1-3, I don't remember it but they always tell me how much they miss it there. I still have a few years till my military obligations are done, then I can seriously consider relocating.
