I figured Id start this thread to represent the bassists out there (If any...).

My top five are:

1.Ryan from Mudvayne: because he turns an otherwise mediocre band into something cool.2. Mic Todd from Coheed and Cambria: Writes some super creative stuff.3. Sting from the Police: Duh, hes a badass.4. Geddy Lee: See above entry.5. Les Claypool: The Don of shred bass.

Wow...I cant believe there is actually someone else who DOESNT think Flea is the best bassist ever. Its nauseating how many people think this when they dont listen to anything other than RHCP and other alt rock bands.

In no particular order:Victor Wooten - Belafleck http://youtube.com/watch?v=8vdJvHE8qxA http://youtube.com/watch?v=4dWb-aCWR8UCliff Burton - bassist from Metallica pre-'86 http://youtube.com/watch?v=7_wGFfrJv4YJohn Myung - Dream Theater http://youtube.com/watch?v=EVJ2zbGmMAI

I've never really payed the bass much attention until I started playing it in a local band about 2 months ago (yes, I do indeed suck at it.)

I would agree with everybody mentioned above, but I was checking out this video today and thought this kid had some talent, something hard to come by in todays music industry.

If you cant find talent in todays music industry you are either horribly misguided or you have a poor definition of talent.

Let me rephrase that. I meant "Mainstream" talent.

Although I guess ABRB isn't really mainstream at all, so let me completely revoke everything in my previous post.

Hey, thats all I was saying

+1 to JPJ, Sheehan, and Claypool of course. I figured Claypool pretty much goes without saying for almost everybody. But anyone who hasn't seen Victor Wooten play really should.

I think it's kind of disappointing how few phenomenal, outstanding bassists there are in even great music. It's not often you hear a song and think "Wow, that bassist is really damn good, that band wouldn't be the same without him/her!" Bass guitar too often just gets buried under the rest of the music. For me, a great bass player is one who makes you say that (above). One who helps MAKE the music, not just back it, nut just provide a template for it. When you not only NOTICE the bass, but it screams out loud that the bass is part of the reason the song is great...THAT is a great bass player.

I can only think of a couple who fit those criteria. The first is Fieldy, of Korn. His sloppy, clanky bass is a HUGE part of what made their early stuff distinctive. The fact that that part of their sound has died away in recent albums is disappointing aside from the fact that it detracts from what was the whole Korn package.

The second is John Entwistle. The Who would not have been the same without him. True R&B NEEDS a good bassist, and the Who is as "true R&B" as you get.

And honorable mention to CCR's Stu Cook. Another great blues band with a defining bassist.

The only reason people think flea is good is because he slaps within the context of popular music. People arent normally exposed to it so they assume he's better than he really is.

To know what slapping is you'd have to have some understanding of bass guitar. My mom/ dog/ sisters friend's boyfriend could listen to flea and not know wtf he is doing, and then listen to Earth wind and fire and not tell a difference. I really don't think ''popular" music has anything to do with it. And RHCP was the most UNpopular band at one point. They have been around for longer than you or I have been breathing. Flea is considered one of the best because he is. Flea has rhythm, chops, and a phenomenal ability to create catchy bass lines. He's isn't the best because there isn't one.

For me it's these men

Jaco Pastorius - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwhkPSEXs1QJohn PatitucciBunny BrunelBen Kenney

Marcus Miller has phat skillz too. And Timmy C. for being a badass

I want to be John Scofield when I grow up.

I like Shibata because he's a great composer too. He's composed almost every Anthem hit song. I don't think he composed this one since it's an instrumental, but listen to the bass. I just can't get enough of it.

I also like Sheehan, Geddy Lee and Stu Hamm.

EDIT: Forgot this guy, Joey DeMaio. Unique Piccolo bass...

Jeff Scott Soto who sang in Yngwie's 1st Rising Force album is one of my favorite vocals. I've been following his career and he was once in a band called Human Clay. He's a bassist in the band.I like shred guitar, so I like shred bass too.

He may not have been the most technical player, but he rocked harder than anybody by a mile in my book.

RIP Cliff

I totally agree. I love to see him playing on the stage. Other Metallica bass players suck.
