faulty gas gauge indications?

My 3.5's trip computer gives me a low range warning when the gas gauge indicates just over 1/8 full. Then the range will slowly go down until it has dashes in the remaining range, all the time the gauge still indicates almost 1/8th above the 'E" mark. Anyone else have this problem?

yeah man. shortly after going under a quarter tank my warning light pops up although it still says i have 30 miles left which actually means you'll make it about 60 miles. don't hold me to that, but i've ran the car out once with spare fuel in the car to test just how far it will go.

My light comes on at an 1/8 tank as well. The "miles to empty" trickle down at the rate of my needle, until it shows the --- when I'm right on the "E".

3 gallons of reserve fuel past E. From E- F, its 17ish gallons.

cosmo kramer... that guy was funny as hell.. anywho, once your low fuel warning comes on you've really got about 100 miles til the engine quits

Confirmed, mine comes on all the time, every time at 4 gal to go. My Z did the same and my Titan came on at 7 gal to go in a 28 gal tank.

mine comes on at about 60km left, which converts to about 37 miles

only seen it come on once so far but consistent with what you guys have gotten, at that point it said I had 28 miles left, I wasn't too worried cause I knew about the 3 gal reserver, ended up getting 577 miles out of that tank and poured in about 18.5 gal of fuel in...was waiting until i hit the jersey turnpike for some cheaper gas

My 2008 coupe 3.5 says no miles at 1/4 tank. Manual says that tank is 20 gallons, when I fill up at empty/no miles holds 15 gallon. Dealer says that wait for awhile computer will train and train and get better over time. Think I smell a rat.

Based on the results with the Z and Titan and now Coupe, I'd say it wants you to fill up around 1/4 tank left to keep any sediment or impurities from getting sucked in all at once...Like I said 4 gal to go here was usually 4-5 for the Z and 7 for the Titan...I have driven 100 miles with -- miles indicated and filled up at 18.98 gal...I was pushing it there

Mine comes on at 40 miles and 30 miles on the dot. But i try not to let my gas gauge go under 1/4. My gauge has never read dashes thow.

I get this a lot too - the gas meter stays really high for a long time, and then it the computer says i have 55 miles left a little after the 1/4 mark - kinda annoying to have that stupid thing flash at you with the light too. I normally just fill up before then though...

This is common practice in most cars today. Keep in mind that not only does it keep you from sucking up sediment but the fuel pumps are also cooled by the gas in the tank. You can actually damage a pump by running your tank dry.
