SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA -- Andrew Leitch was out for a walk with his parents and his baby boy in the Sydney suburb of Penrith, when he was hit by an out-of-control car.
The accident was captured on all three CCTV cameras on location.
The car that caused the accident was driven by an eighty-two year-old woman who is believed to have suffered a heart attack at the wheel.
She hit a parked car, went through a red light at a T-intersection and was travelling at 70 kilometres an hour when she hit Michael Ball, Caroline and David Leitch, Andrew Leitch and 4 month old Hayden Leitch.
"That day is just so easy to remember. After pulling myself out and the little blokie out of the window, looking around at mum and dad, I thought the worst," said Andrew Leitch.
The dramatic video was captured from three different angles showing how the father never let go of his baby during the whole incident.
"We were just going for a stroll yeah, just a normal family thing there. I heard a bit of a screech and I actually said to the old man, it's probably just another young puppy doing a burn-out. This is Penrith, and he joked a bit and turned to me and I turned around and she was on top of us," said Leitch.
Leitch managed to angle his body in the split second of the accident to shield the baby from the full impact of the crash, but he took the full force of the hit, breaking his leg.
The baby boy was unharmed.
"I can take the hit. That was more or less what I was thinking. You know I can repair, there's no way he is gonna repair. I thought if they hit the back of me, you know, I've got at least a chance of you know, I might break a leg or whatever, that's fixable but, they hit me son he's not fixable," said Leitch, his parents were also injured in the accident.
"Dad wasn't moving so I went over to him and I grabbed him by the shirt and told him to get up and he tried, tried so hard but he was, he had a heart attack and hit in the head and all sorts of things you know, he just, and I told him to lay down and I could see that mum wasn't moving and I thought nah. Natural reaction I turned around and looked at her she was out to it," said Leitch.
Michael Ball was on his way to work and was just about to enter his office, he managed to escape when he saw the car coming and jumped out of the way just in time.
"I got to about here and started to walk into the office and I realised the car just wasn't going to stop. So, the acceleration, I could just hear the engine revving, it's getting louder and louder," said Ball.
Leitch remained philosophical about what happened that day.
"At first I was cranky at her, Really cranky, but again it's an accident. What do you do, you can't, if I seen her on the street I'd still ask her if she's ok and how things are going. Everyone's human," added Leitch.
Leitch's parents have since recovered from the accident while 4-month old Hayden is too young to remember the incident.
