This is not the first time I've heard about the VK45 burning oil. What year was the car? Hopefully, Nissan addressed the situation in the newer engine builds.

My 94 Q w/ over 230k miles doesn't burn any oil period and it sees redline (6900 rpm) at least once every time I drive it.

Interesting thing about the VK series engines is that the 5.6L version in my Titan (my Q45 replacement) has not had any reported oil consumption problems. I have checked on the Titan/Armada/etc. forums and nobody mentions anything about oil consumption. There is a problem with them somehow getting the CAT's clogged and then subsequently the engine uses a ton of oil and inturn needs replacement, but the CAT's have always failed first and it seems to be very rare that this occurs.

The cats usually fail either from an over-rich mixture or because the engine is burning oil. I remember a post from Q45tech where he said that newer Nissan engines use low tension piston rings for more power. That could be the cause of most oil burning issues.

Also, most newer vehicles have the piston ring lands very close to the top of the piston. It would be very easy for the ring lands or the rings to be damaged by detonation.

Once that happens, oil consumption can increase suddenly and dramatically. If this is the case, then the catalytic converters would clog up in a very short time. You would probably notice the failed converters before you noticed that the engine was burning too much oil.

If you guys have done 4-5 already, how much oil burn do you consider too much to swap an engine out? Also the M smokes on startup, Need the dealer to address that also.

Mine is about 1qt every 2500 miles.

* I know I change my oil a little too early.

Here are some discussions on M45 oil consumption on the (2003 and 2004 models) that may be useful:

Jesda, I have noticed you are posting a lot of song lyrics in responses lately. Particularly TV show theme songs.

Just a trend? Watching too much TV?

This is completely normal for this engine.

Also, I have a Honda S2000, and it's completely normal for it to burn 1 quart every 1k. Even more than the Q.Honda even published a memo about it.

Every once in a while I lose my mind and post completely incoherent blabber. By every once in a while, I mean 24/7/365.
