I know this is only for 240 related problems, but I thought maybe this could be a general problem that one of you could have an idea about (also rarely any people go on the SUV columns so please no jerks. we are all here for the same reason, to help and read about cars.)

I have a '00 Xterra, and I've heard about a lot of the '00, '01 Xterras having problems with their air conditioning system, and I was wondering if there was a way to fix it?
When I turn my air on it works for about 10 minutes then it starts to fade away, and then if I leave it on it will come in and out from being cold to just air blowing.
Now this is the weird part, if I turn my air feed to only 'defrost' the air is really cold without the air condition button on.

What is happening? What do I have to replace?

I know I should have looked at this in the winter//fall instead of now that it's getting hot, but I wasn't thinking about it until it got hot, and now it's driving me crazy :gotme if anyone can help I'd appreciate it
:bowrofl:

Firstly, welcome to NICO!

I would start by checking the A/C line pressure and go from there. Maybe stop/go traffic is causing the pressure to fluctuate and causing the system to lose efficiency? I'm just spit-balling here. On a lot of cars when you turn the HVAC controls to defrost it will automatically turn the A/C on since it must be on to effectively defrost the windows; this is something you could probably find in the owners manual.

Alright, well answer me a few questions...

1. Does the cold air fade in an out when you are driving, standstill, or a mix of both?

2. Figure out if Xterra's have some sort of AC relay control box and if you can try swapping it out with one that works (or if you are good with electronics check for any burned out solder).

3. Check all your HVAC fuses.

4. Check to see if your AC fan stops intermittently while the AC is on (if your AC is ON your AC fan should ALWAYS be ON).

5. Check to see if this is a common problem and go from there.

Good luck! :bigthumb:

It's a little bit mix of both

Thanks for the reply, I'll look into all those things and repost if I have any more doubts. :dblthumb:

Thanks for the feedback. It happens when I'm on the free way as well which confuses me because what you're saying makes sense, and the freeway is consistent so it's just confusing, I'll look into those suggestions and re post if it's not any of these things Thanks!
