hi, im new to the boards and to 240's, but i was wondering if the fan is supposed to be on all the time since mine is. i think its a little strange that when i start my car up, the fan turns right on. in addition to that, the motor is extremely loud and sounds like a loud blowing of air (cant really describe it). and on top of that, i get the nasty screaching whenever i go over 3k rpm's. anyone have any ideas as to what some problems may be? btw, its a 95se...

sounds like the clutch mechanism on the fan. if you want my advise, i would take it off and buy an electric fan to replace it. you will gain power taking the mechanical fan off as it is one less load on the engine.

I know that my fan turns when it is cold, even though it barely spins. I believe one way to test it is to try to spin the fan with the engine off after it has cooled down. It it spins freely, there shouldn't be a problem, but if it is hard to move something is probably wrong with the viscous clutch for the fan. (as the fluid in fan clutch heats up, it solidifies and spins the fan more and more.) If something is wrong it might have locked up and be spinning with engine rpms. This is definatly not good, I have heard stories of fans coming apart at 6000 rpm, bad stuff. The fact that it is whining is not good, but that might be a lose belt or something. Definatly check it out soon.

Yea, the fan is always on. However, when you hit the highway it goes into a free-spin like bcar240 says. It will be ok.

The performance advantages between the mechanical & electrical fan are "controversial," you can look at the billion threads we have on nico for that.

Advantages of the electrical fan for sure: more working space, easier to get access to things like upper radiator hose, coolant temp sensor, pulleys & belts, etc.

Disadvantage: make sure you ground that **** & set up the relays securely, cuz if anything loses its ground, no more spinning fan -> overheat. Happened to me a few days ago bcs of my stupid *** grounding it to a bolt that snapped that day . Also, if you run underdrive pulley w/ sound system & headlights on, raise the idle - my car can barely handle the stuff - I deal w/ it tho, hehe.
