my car is a 96 240sx with 126k on it...i has a oil leak that is very small and i can't find where it is from but everyday i move the car from my driveway there is 3-4 drops of oil. i have replaced the spark plugs, wires, rotor, cap, oil change, and o2 sensor...but when i first bought the car the emissions light wasn't on..i filled it up with some cheap gas b/c it was all they had at that gas station and after 10 miles the emissions light came on and has been on for a month after i replaced all that crap...i've had it for 3 months now and every now and then the light will go off but the car still hesitates and lags like i was driving a go cart with 30 horsepower..and half the time when i start the car no matter if the engine is warm or cold it will die on me..and half the time i start it up black or white smoke comes out the exhaust...i've tried driving and then putting it in neutral and the tach goes down to about 2-300 rpms and sometimes will go back up to 6-700rpms after 3-4 seconds, but a couple times it has dropped so low it almost stalls..when i sit at idle at a light and put it in neutral and rev it, it makes a noise like squelling brakes..but it idles very low around 5-600rpms usually and sometimes it will stay around 900-1000rpms and run fine...i do need a new air filter but it will have to wait for another week...i fill up my tank and it gets probably 20mpg on premium gas (mid-grade)...any ideas?....also i can't figure out what i damaged when i hit the curb with my front right tire after my back end went sideways and i overcompensated and hit the curb at 30mph ...when i accelerate hard the steering wheel will shake a little bit but when i'm driving at 70mph+ my wheel shakes dangerously and when i brake my wheel shakes very hard..could that be my rotors? i also have all 4 shocks nearly blown so that doesn't help any with handling..any suggestions?

get the code from the system. Did you happen to leave the gas cap off when you got gas? that will trigger a cel. For the steering shake I would say check your tension rods at the front see if the bushings are ripped open. for the starting concern; if the starter cranks the engine at normal starting speed(revolution speed) It wouldnt be the battery.

it will take 3 good tests under very stringent conditions for the fuel cap code to turn the light back off. it may take several drive cycles for it to perform 3 good tests as you saw it took a month before it went out the last time.

to pull codes use the procedure goto http://240sx.org/faq/index.html then click onECM, reading trouble codes DOHC

when i first got the car the cap was on and the light still came on..after a month it went off then i lost my cap and after 1 day of driving it came back on nad then i bought a new cap..now it comes on every now and then...and ideas on why i dies at idle? could that be from the oil leak??

not likely it is from the oil leak. Try retrieving the code see if it might be related.

so i watch for however many flashes the red led does like 1 pause then 2 would be 12 right....am i supposed to reset the codes? it was saying something about mode 1 and mode2 hold clockwise for 2 seconds to switch right...what is the difference...once i read the code what do i do after that...the article was a little confusing.

i read this off one of the topics....this sounds familiar.

Most 240sx's eventually have a problem idling. This is related to the IAA valve which control the air mixture during idle. The two options to fix this are to have a dealer adjust the valve or simply have it replaced.

The symptoms are clear: as you hit the clutch or lay off the gas and the car begins to slow and idle the RPMs may drop (sometimes quite rapidly) to extremely low levels, sometimes actually stalling completely. If this is happening have someone check out your IAA valve and you may wish to clean all the ground wire connections for the car's ignition and injection system.

I hope this helps.

no you do not need to reset the codes. when you cycle the key it will reset back to mode one and the codes will still be present. basically all you are doing is rotating it clockwise then rotate it back and start counting flashes. should have 2 lights one red one green at least thats the way the older ones are. the red lights is your tenths digit and the green is your ones digit. it will flash the code a couple times then if there are more codes it will flash the next one 2 times and so on till it flashes the first code again if it is the only code in the system it will just keep flashing it.
