The car would have to be converted to meet DoT Specs. I have two Fairlady Zs (1980 and 1984). There are a few out there that have slipped through the cracks and are not registered with DoT as gray market vehicles. The conversion is expensive depending on what needs to be done, the following is what is required for safety:
- DoT Safety Glass- MPH Speedometer- Doors and bumpers reenforced if not already stateside ready- DoT Tires
Emissions is another story, I had a harship exemption letter from EPA as I was a junior enlisted sailor in the USN in 1989 when I shipped my 1980 to London for two years. EPA does not exempt any longer, which is why you have not seen more Fairladys over here. If you car has emissions, then it should not be a problem for someone that buys it.
DoT Conversion on my 1980 in 1991 ran me $1,200.00 and I had DoT tires and glass. The company had to post a $10,000.00 bond on the vehicle to take cusody while the conversion was completed.
As far as selling, nobody wants to put up the money that a Fairlady is worth unless they are a collector. I had my 1984 Turbo 2000 on Ebay and it only went to $5000.00.
Good luck!
Cheers, Kirk
