I just got done with the emisssions test and i passed everthing exept the idle test. The idle mode limit (HC) is 220 and my got is at (HC) 283. What parts do I need to fix this problem?

I dont know if it makes a big difference or not but I believe my 95 came with obd2. They did not test my car as if it was an obd2.Could that have anything to do with the failing the idle test.

Thanks in advance.

HC is a measurement of raw unburnt fuel coming out the tail pipe.HC's are caused by a miss fire either by ignition or lean fuel condition. does your read out show a NOx reading on it? This will help indicate which it might be. also what was your CO ,CO2, And O2 readings? Typical ignition components that can cause this are spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor. lets get the rest of your readings and try to determine what type of miss you have.also what type of measurement do they use in CT. PPM or GPM .. I am more familier with PPM here in CA

i was gonna say check your intake tract for leaks, and replace your plugs and o2 sensor and give it another shot.

your too rich at idle.

it also wouldnt hurt to clean your throttle body.

HC's alone do not indicate its a rich condition. If the CO was high I would say yes but he didnt give them up yet so its hard to say. It just may not be burning the fuel its getting. lack of ignition of fuel or firing out of time.

missed your obd part of your question... OBDII was not implemented federaly till 1996 so there is no requirement to perform the strickter test procedures.

very true, but doing plugs and an o2 woudnt exactly be a bad thing. cant complain about gas mileage.

without the CO2 reading you cant tell if its rich or just passing unburned, so its speculation either way...

no CO2 is engine/cat effenciency that reading will not give you a precise indication of mixture condition. CO2 is only a by product of the burn. But CO is more of what you should be looking at to determine a rich or lean condition. CO is created by partially burnt fuel cells. the higher CO count you have the more fuel there is in the system. with out that in conjunction with HC you do not have a rich system instead what you are getting is a lack of burn.

i forgot about the cat converting NOx's into H2O and CO2

thats the beauty of working in a shop.

I dont get your last post but your prior is somewhat accurate precat deoxgenates Oxides of nitrogen (NOx) which allows that oxygen to travel to the TWC or OC these cats store that oxygen and use it to combine with the Hydro Carbon (HC) and form H2O and combine the oxygen with Carbon Monoxide (CO) to create CO2. these cats are only designed to handle a certain amount of the produced pollutants and when the pollutants exceed that amount you have a smog failure because the cats are working as hard as they can. the best way to tell if a cat is working at a acceptable efficiency is to observe the CO2 readings. If on a Dyno in a loaded mode of 50/15 or 25/25 a good reading would be around 14 to 15 % CO2 when your % gets down around 12% you need to start checking your cats efficiency or your burn process in the cyl.

If i am to understand your last post. I dont nessesarily feel its a beauty to work on a smog machine if your a smog tech at not least here in CA. Being a enhanced area smog tech myself I find my job constantly under the gun by the state Bureau of Automotive Repair. They watch you like a hawk. Every test is transmited to a state data base and reviewed. If something in the report doesnt jive ,a red flag is thrown in the system and with in a couple weeks they come pay you a visit. You hope you dont get fined.

im not big on the emmison control aspect of vehicles.

im in new york, and they way it works here, is the vehicle gets a saftey inspection, then its run on a dyno with a sniffer in the tailpipe. you follow the speed on a course laid out by the computer, as the unit analyses the emmisions. there is also a little camera to make sure the car on the dyno is the car being inspected.

so what we do is put the car on the dyno, and put the sniffer in the tail pipe of the car in the next bay. not legal, but it get the "special" cars through. we only do it for friends of the owners and the like. if normal customers fail, they fail.

[we dont have smog nazis here like you guys in CA]

it doesnt say all i have is the HC(ppm), CO(%), and the rpm's CT has a new emissions program, i guess this is all they test now

yea I understand that. from a smog techs point of veiw, the problem with that program is you cant really diagnose the failure with out seeing the whole picture because each of the gases coincide with each other and help point you to the problem. from what i see in your readings you have a lean condition causeing a miss fire. my guess would be if you had oxygen readings they would be around 2 % . check your plugs pull them out and inspect their condition. if they look worn replace them. also check your ignition timing as well.
