heres the scoop:89' s13 ka24e w/ header, cat back otherwise stock.newer o2 sensor, h2o temp sensor tested good, can't find any obvious vac. leaks. Car is driven hard (track days and auto-x).

emission sheet says:

HC= 0.4084 limit is 0.8000 CO= 6.4688 limit is 15.000 NOx=2.7239 limit is 2.000 ( this is what failed me)

Car starts and runs good but im told smokes out of the tailpipe when coming off the line. Car also pops ( backfiring) a lot when letting off of gas when engine is both cold and hot.

any ideas? I thought that maybe the engine was leaking though the intake valve seals but this is just grasping at straws. I haven't done a leak down yet.

your EGR is not functioning. is it still hooked up? when you put the header on did it have the bung for the egr tube? If you omitted your EGR you are never going to pass the test. Post with the info on the EGR statis[there or not]

the catback exhaust might be ruining your day too. It ruined mine on smog check day until I pulled it for the stock one for testing.

EGR valve is still there and hooked up correctly. I just double checked vacuum hose locations w/ fsm and they appear to be correct. Tube crossing back of motor to exhaust header is also still installed.

So if its the egr what is the best way to test that system out?The three things that seem to be involved are the B.P.T. valve , the E.G.R. control sol. and the E.G.R. valve itself.

check the hose under the BPT make sure it does not have a pin hole in it. you can just about tell when that hose is no good it will feel mushy and/or fall apart in your hand.

take into consideration here what 180fan said if you have cat back exhaust this could be your problem as it will not allow enough back pressure in the exhaust to close the BPT valve under accel.

the hose that you are refering to has been replaced about 2 mo. ago. I know what you mean by mushy and falling apart.

So the BPT needs a little back pressure eh? Is there a way to tell w/ a vacuum gauge whether or not that item is functioning properly?

yea hook a vaccum gauge to your vaccum line going to the egr from the bpt. clamp the largest socket you can fit into your tail pipe with a pair of visegrips. If you have one of those fart cans for a tail pipe a small coffee can with 3 or 4 1/4 to 3/8 holes drilled in the bottom of it should work. then while the car is running moniter the vaccum gauge while you bring the throttle up and maintain like 2500 to 3000 rpm. if the bpt is capable of doing its job it should hold about 5 inches or so of vaccum. If it doesnt come up either the bpt is not functioning or its plugged up. make sure though you have vaccum to the BPT from the solonoid with the engine held off idle about 1200 rpm or higher before you do the other test. if it all seem to work ok reach under the EGR at idle and push up on the diaphram inside the rpm should drop more then 100 rpm thats bare minimum it will likely almost die if it is flowing properly.

If you have vaccum at the egr when you restrict the exhaust you are going to have to go back to the stock exhaust.
