The good news is that you're located in Atlanta - the same city as the Q45 mecca of the country. It may be worth your while to call the S. Cobb location at 404-794-7700 and have them take a look at it. You'll save $$ over dealership prices and typically save $$ over having someone who doesn't know the older Q's throwing parts at it! We have members driving 18+ hours to get there.

From looking at the 96 service manual, the P0171 code is what you described - lean left bank. The summary says that:

Malfunction is detected when...*Fuel Injection system does not operate properly.*The amount of mixture ratio compensation is too large. (The mixture ratio is too lean.)

Check Items (Possible Cause):*Intake Air Leaks*Front heated oxygen sensor (left bank)*Injectors (left bank)*Exhaust gas leaks*Incorrect fuel pressure*Lack of fuel*Mass air flow sensor

Then the manual goes into five more pages of diagnostic steps. I'd recommend visiting T3 if you've never been there before.

Good luck and welcome to NICO!!

thanx all for your quick response the emissions test shows MIL commander - fail

is it safe to say the O2 sensor should at least get me a pass (tags are due) then in a couple of weeks have T3 do the KS - I called and they recommend if they go in they might as well do it all, both KS etc.

THANX TO ALL AGAIN GREAT FORUM - LEARNING A LOT

There's no overlap on the O2 sensors vs. knock sensors, so I'd have T3 take a look at it from a "make it pass" standpoint first, and then schedule a second visit for knock sensors.

With the potential problem being several things (bad injector, MAF, etc) I wouldn't have someone else throw parts at it... If you're doing your own work, it's time for front O2 sensors anyway, so you might as well do them - even if they don't fix the problem consider it preventative maintenence. If someone else is doing the work, T3 is the place to go. Sometimes I wish I lived in Atlanta just for that reason.

If you've been reading some of the posts here, our very own Q45Tech is a frequent visitor at T3. He doesn't work there, but I think there's a cot in the back for him... Between his knowledge of the 1st gen. Q and Byrons skills, you'll be in the best hands in the country.

Ive had fluid on the top of my engine for a whle now as there must be a slow leak as I add water every week or so. I can see green stuff just under the intake pipes on top.

Does this hurt the knock sensors? How?

It will hurt them by corroding the connectors on the harness and the sensor itself...
