OKay so I took my car(89 240 w ka24) in to have it tested and I failed due to being over on hydro carbons and Carbon Monoxide. My readings are as follows. HC GPM 4.7842 Limit 3,000 FAILCO GPM 29.7913 Limit 20.000 FAILCO2 GPM 367.6077NOx GPM 1.5267 Limit 6.000 PASS

I'm thinking of taking it into a shop, can anyone give me any ideas of easy things to check before taking it to the shop? What is the procedure with seafoam? Is the EGR a hard thing to clean? How bad did my car fail? Thanks much.

sea foam cleans out your carbon deposits, i dont think it will help you much, and i prefer the spray version of sea foam, its called deep creep

how do these tests work? if they stick a probe in the muffler then you can probably separate the cat from the rear exhaust a little (spacer, washer, etc) and the readings should be lower

They basically take the car and put it on a dyno type thing and put to tube on the muffler and let her rip I guess. How do you make yours pass? Via bribe? All our emission check stations are state owned so I doubt I would be able to bribe them.

I'm surprised you're not failing at the usual NOx, which would be related to your EGR. So you're thinkin about the wrong stuff.

Ok, so you've got a too much fuel out the pipe situation. When was the last time you did1. a tune up (plugs, o2, ignition wires, distributor cap/rotor, checked over timing, replaced fuel filter, air filter, pcv should be on this list as well and since it's very easy to replace on the sohc...)2. replaced your coolant temp sensor?3. had your injectors checked for leaks?4. had your catalytic converter inspected for the honeycombed material inside it to still be in there?

Basically you're looking for an explanation for why you've got too much fuel getting dumped into the cylinders and causing you to fail on the CO and the HC which points back to the stuff above. Give it a shot and report back.
