The steering wheel on my '93 240SX is faded, and I really want to color it black again, does anyone have any idea on how to do this? Its a rubber kind of material, i have no idea what exactly the material is, but i really want it colored back to black.

er... they don't fade really. They just get gunk built up on them. Clean it off and it should look the same as new.

what? so, like a degreaser? man, this thing is FADED, it has turned like a brown green from the black and almost the entire thing is like that, its not an armor all kind of situation, the car was in FL. Do you really think that I can degrease it and it will look black again?

Just scrape your fingernail on the part where it's "faded". You'll see what I mean.

maybe it really is faded...if he says it is, it could be under unique circumstances, the heat and humidity of florida could have faded it, do you garage your car at all?, are any other parts of you interior faded? at least give cleaning it a try but if that doesn't do it then i dunno what to tell you other than search for a new wheel.

Does the area you scratch turn kind of a white color? I'm betting it's just gunk. I mean, I don't really think the stuff it's made of can fade.

yeah, it leaves like a white scratch, the car was originally in FL (i dont think it was garage kept) and I brought it to GA, but it is NOW garage kept, im trying to restore the car, im doing ALOT of restoration work to it, and learning it all as I go. If it really is just junk, what can I use to get it off? like name brands and all? or a link to a company that makes something?

don't use anything with pumice in it, that will destroy the underlying material. Try goo gone or something like that. Or you can just slowly scrape it all off and clean it with a soapy rag.

ok, i did and it TOTALLY messed it up, and took it down to like a grey and also liked sanded it down on its own with just a rag... it was weird, it got gritty and grey in the area, so, now im trying something else, im doing that to all the sides, and im using shoe polish to blacken it back, it is a dye, so maybe that will work the way i want to it... i guess well see...

it would kinda suck to end up with shoe polish all over your hands!

LOL, true, but its actually working really well, i let it sit over night, and today I am going to put armor all or something else on it maybe a clear coat or something to make it really stay, but i JUST drove it, and its not comming off at all. Ill post pics if it works or not, this should be interesting. But at the VERY least I have to buy a new wheel, big deal.

If you put armor all all over your steering wheel, it'll become so slick that your hands will slip off, worst of all when you need them to slip the least. Dont ask how I know.

Pusha! No, the steering wheel is fine. What gets REALLY slippery is the shifter.Besides, if you don't use too much, wipe it down, and wash your hands really well, it'll be fine.

I'd just get a different steering wheel if you're really restoring the thing. The green and brown is mold and algae. I live in FL and see this all the time in junk yards. I'm guessing that you have the leather wrapped steering wheel. I believe that the standard steering wheel is underneath the leather and will look brand new if you pull the leather off (I'm not completely sure though). I did this with my leather wrapped shifter knob and it looks much better without the lever. Plus the knob has the shift pattern imprinted on it (wasn't stamped into the leather).
