It is my understanding that manufacturers tint their windows by using some type of die rather than a film. For instance my G37 seems to have a slightly tinted window (not sure how much) but there is no film. I have seen some G37 that have much darker windows in the back. Is this something that can be ordered when purchasing the car or are these dark tints all after-market using film?

One of my main concern with having it done after market is that they take off the door panels and don't properly put them back on or equally bad don't reapply the seals so leaking water will produce short circuits. There are some shops that don't take out the windows but I wonder how well they can cover edge-to-ege.

Any input is appreciated.

All the factory tinting is going to be the same and is internal to the window. Anything darker will be aftermarket, either done by the new owner or the dealership sends it out to get film added.

And I'd say you are a bit too paranoid. A good tint shop has been doing it for years and isn't going to screw up anything. Most places do not remove the windows or panels, they have skills/tools to cover completely.

Biggie, thank you. Indeed, I am probably a bit paranoid about this. It's just that I had a 20+ year old car and finally spent a lot of money on a used 37S.

Btw, one shop in the San Franciso Bay area quoted me $220-$270 for the 3 back windows (no front) incl the two small windows in the back. Considering what I saw on this forum this seems high or is that cost due to having split windows in the back and the location?

I paid around $125 for 35% front and 20% rear on my G37s coupe. They do not need to remove the door panels.
