I took apart my interior to reseal my rear quarter windows and install some Kilmat in the rear. It appears there is already some sound deadening in place from the factory around the wheel wells and a few other areas.

Is it better to leave the existing factory insulation and simply put the Kilmat around it (or even on top of it), or should I take off the factory stuff and put Kilmat everywhere?

(I'm referring to the black rubber anti-vibration material, not the foam stuff).

Thanks.

If it is still serviceable I would leave it alone, but it may be brittle and not very effective anymore. I had to reseal those quarter windows in 1990 when the seals melted out while the car was parked at Arizona State's parking lot in 119 degrees, be careful with all the little clips, those were melted on mine and it was never quite the same.

I believe this is what you are looking for:

Alternatively, you could try a junkyard or look for a Z that is being parted out.

I ended up removing the old stuff on the wheel wells. It wasn't brittle, but it was pretty hard and I'm not sure how effective it was. I left the existing insulation everywhere else because removing it was a pain, and I just added more new stuff where it seemed necessary. The amount I used was probably overkill, but I made up for the extra few pounds by removing the spare wheel that had been in there since 1986 and was never going to be of any use.

Looks like a good job, did you replace that plate, the one that was available from the vintage parts looked rusted I would have never put that into my car.

Great site, I never saw before. Funny a part I have been hunting down that z31partsforyou has been out of for 2 years they don't have either (digital dash fuel sending unit)

Glad I checked this post I am sure I will hit them up for some parts.

The one in my car is original. If for some reason it had been missing, the one from vintage parts would work, it would just need to be stripped and cleaned and repainted.

The car should be fully done in June. I'll get some video of how it sounds with the new sound insulation at that time.

Yup not question you don't want to introduce a rusty part into your car, just wondering why they are selling rusty part, I know Z31partsforyou are always really cleaned up and rust free. They have never failed to send me a good clean part but he doesn't have everything.

I was so hoping to get that gas sending unit, my gauge is off, it goes to empty and then the 5 gallon indicator comes on, I always panic a little bit when it shows empty and the 5 gallon doesn't come for a few miles, but the orange warning light doesn't come on and the voice warning doesn't give me the fuel level is low indicator.

This will let you use any new sender that fits in the hole:

thanks but I would still need to find a gas gauge sensor only in analog, which I haven't found either

Nope, you teach it the analog input by making the gauge read properly at full and empty, then it interpolates. So it doesn't care what sensor or gauge you use.

So I would keep using the one that I have that isn't reading correctly?

No, but as long as the gauge is okay but the sender is bad, you can use any sender from the parts store that fits in the hole. If the gauge is bad it's a different story.
