I recently bought a used 02 f50 with 140k on it. Had a major incident today... i tried to do a 3 point turn and while trying to go from D to R, somehow, the shifter goes into the steptronic sections of the gear selector but my gear indicator on the gauge showed it being in Neutral. and worst of all, it was stuck in that position, so the car was rolling back but gear selector stuck in the steptronic section and would not come back to the regular D,N,R section. My brother came by and we both were pulling to the left with all our mights trying to get it back up to Reverse or even Park but no luck. Finally, he kicked it left and it came unstuck, but when we moved it all the way up to Park, the gear indicator light showed it being in Park, even if we moved the selector up and down between R and P. There's no resistance that you would normally feel.

If someone can pls tell me what happen and/or where we can start to resolve this issued. I'm hoping that we didn't mess out the transmission completely when it was kicked... any help would be greatly appreciated as always. TIA!!!! pls help

thanks maxnix! i'll get under the car today and that's the first place i'll look. It was too dark last night.. plus i know theres a junk yard near my house with a 02 f50 complete w/ motor and trans.. is the linkage hard to replace, or is it just in plan view once the car is jacked up?

Download FSM so you understand system. The signals are electronic not manual [linkage]....................things in and under center console.

i just looked at the fsm and found the diagram for the gear selector.. it all looks foreign to me. I'll have to see if i can get someone who understands. but just from judging by messing with the gear selector now, it seems that theres no resistance or hint of the linkage changing the gears as I move from P down to D, just one smooth motion. so does this sound mechanical vs. electrical?

I agree that it was electrical in origin, but now it sounds as if the linkage has also suffered mechanical damage.

I have little simpathy for people who treat machines this way.

The point is abusive owners of early Q and Q41 got to spend big in replacing the gear control/brake lock out assembly from abusive shfiting.Lucky there is a $1000 module and mechanical assembly on the wrecked car.

It was not abusive shifting, hard to do on an automotic from my point of view... I found the problem.... opened the gear selector and saw only 1 out of 4 screws which held the mechanisms for the shifter. the part that connects the actual shifter to the linkage is plastic and was broken somehow. So as I was shifting through the different gears, the whole inside of the gear selector was loose. This definately will not be a common problem for the f50 but the previous owner(s), for some reason, had the whole assembly removed and installed it without care. I got the whole assembly from the junk yard and she's as good as new. thanks for the help guys!
